Polymorphism analysis of drug resistance markers in Plasmodium falciparum isolates from Benin
Acta Trop. 2023 Jun 20:106975. doi: 10.1016/j.actatropica.2023.106975. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLike most countries in sub-Saharan African countries, Benin continues to bear a heavy malaria burden. In 2014, the National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) changed its treatment policy, and recommended the use of artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) as first-line treatment for uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum cases. The study presented here was conducted to investigate the impact of current antimalarial drug resistance on the country. Molecular surveillance targeting the Pfcrt, Pfmdr1, Pfkelch13, dhfr, and dhps g...

Neurologic Complications of Babesiosis, United States, 2011-2021
Emerg Infect Dis. 2023 Jun;29(6):1127-1135. doi: 10.3201/eid2906.221890.ABSTRACTBabesiosis is a globally distributed parasitic infection caused by intraerythrocytic protozoa. The full spectrum of neurologic symptoms, the underlying neuropathophysiology, and neurologic risk factors are poorly understood. Our study sought to describe the type and frequency of neurologic complications of babesiosis in a group of hospitalized patients and assess risk factors that might predispose patients to neurologic complications. We reviewed medical records of adult patients who were admitted to Yale-New Haven Hospital, New Haven, Connecti...

Impact of a centralized archive for pathology laboratories on the health system
Pathol Res Pract. 2023 Apr 25;245:154488. doi: 10.1016/j.prp.2023.154488. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe pathology archive of any hospital is likely to contain tens of thousands of slides and formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded (FFPE) blocks, with their number constantly increasing. As a result, serious space and management issues are created. There has always been a favorable location for the pathology laboratory to rapidly and efficiently collect specimens and to meet the different service requirements of clinicians and patients. However, archiving may be one of the most neglected issues in the planning of spaces and...

Drug Use Practices and Self-treatment for Suspected Malaria in Ibadan, Nigeria
This study was designed to assess the pattern of drug use practices and self-treatment options among caregivers in Ibadan, Nigeria. Structured questionnaires were used as research instruments. The results indicated that most caregivers were mothers (88.8%), 69% of caregivers self-prescribed and self-managed malaria for children under 5 years old without immediate hospital visits, and 76.4% of the caregivers believed most recommended and available antimalarial drug...
