Protein Induced by Vitamin K Absence or Antagonist-II Versus Alpha-Fetoprotein in the Diagnosis of Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Systematic Review With Meta-Analysis
CONCLUSION: This study reveals that PIVKA-II is a promising biomarker for identifying and tracking HCC, exhibiting greater accuracy than AFP. Our findings indicate that PIVKA-II outperforms AFP in detecting HCC across diverse racial groups and sample sizes, as well as in cases of HBV-related, HCV-related, or mixed-etiology HCC.PMID:37575350 | PMC:PMC10416192 | DOI:10.14740/jocmr4951

Diagnostic Role of Tumor Markers for Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Liver Transplantation Candidates: An Analysis Using the Korean Organ Transplantation Registry Database
CONCLUSIONS The results of the present study indicate that pretransplant serum AFP and PIVKA-II were highly variably expressed in LT candidates with end-stage liver diseases; therefore, their values should be cautiously interpreted because their role in HCC diagnosis is limited.PMID:36097403 | DOI:10.12659/AOT.936937

All-trans retinoic acid inhibits HCV replication by downregulating core levels via E6AP-mediated proteasomal degradation
Biochem Biophys Res Commun. 2022 Jan 17;594:15-21. doi: 10.1016/j.bbrc.2022.01.052. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHere, we found that all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA), the most biologically active metabolite of vitamin A, strengthens the anti-viral defense mechanism of E6-associated protein (E6AP) that downregulates hepatitis C virus (HCV) Core levels via ubiquitin-dependent proteasomal degradation. For this effect, ATRA downregulated both protein and enzyme activity levels of DNA methyltransferase 1 and 3b and activated E6AP expression via promoter hypomethylation in HepG2 cells but not in Hep3B cells, in which p53 was abse...

Hepatic and gastrointestinal disturbances in Egyptian patients infected with coronavirus disease 2019: A multicentre cohort study
CONCLUSION: Few Egyptian patients with COVID-19 developed a significant liver injury. The independent variables affecting mortality were supplementary vitamin C intake, lung consolidation, ICU admission, and FIB-4 score.PMID:34790017 | PMC:PMC8567470 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v27.i40.6951
