Flipped Versus Online-Only Instruction in the Neurology Clerkship: A Comparative Effectiveness Study of Best-Practices in Medical Education (S3.002)
Conclusions: In this comparative look at contemporary curricular delivery approaches, we observed no difference in knowledge-based exam performance between flipped and online-only instruction. Illuminating Graduate Medical Education Outcomes in Order to Improve Them
Optimizing clinician education is an essential step toward enhancing health outcomes, and graduate medical education (GME)—as the pipeline for producing the nation’s physicians—is an appropriate target for improvement. This Invited Commentary focuses on the need to clarify the specific goals of GME and measure achievement of those goals, using consistent metrics. The authors report on an October 2017 National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) workshop focused on this agenda. A broadly representative group of participants reflected strong consensus in support of using GME outcomes data to develo...

Harnessing the Power of Big Data to Improve Graduate Medical Education: Big Idea or Bust?
With the advent of electronic medical records (EMRs) fueling the rise of big data, the use of predictive analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence are touted as transformational tools to improve clinical care. While major investments are being made in using big data to transform health care delivery, little effort has been directed toward exploiting big data to improve graduate medical education (GME). Because our current system relies on faculty observations of competence, it is not unreasonable to ask whether big data in the form of clinical EMRs and other novel data sources can answer questions of importa...
