Academy of Plant-based Physical Therapy: overdue to address a nutrition crisis with a transformative population approach
J Phys Ther Sci. 2023 Sep;35(9):645-658. doi: 10.1589/jpts.35.645. Epub 2023 Sep 2.ABSTRACTThis timely evidence synthesis supports the need for an Academy of Plant-based Physical Therapy. Given epidemiological and empirical evidence and the profession's values and practice scope, the time has come for a specialty of plant-based physical therapy based on population health principles. This review connects these factors. Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are largely nutrition-related resulting from unnatural elements of our diet (i.e., heart disease, several cancers, hypertension, stroke, diabetes, obesity, gastrointestinal di...

Saturated Fat Intake and the Prevention and Management of Cardiovascular Disease in Adults: An Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Evidence-Based Nutrition Practice Guideline
The objective of this evidence-based nutrition practice guideline is to provide healthcare and public health professionals, particularly RDNs, with evidence-based recommendations on how to address SFA intake in adults within an individualized healthy dietary pattern. Moderate evidence supports the reduction of SFA intake for CVD event reduction, low to moderate certainty evidence supports prioritization of replacement of SFAs with polyunsaturated fatty acids, and low certainty evidence supports focusing on reducing the total amount of SFA rather than specific food sources of SFA. Guideline implementation should include con...

Fatigue in Adults: Evaluation and Management
Am Fam Physician. 2023 Jul;108(1):58-69.ABSTRACTFatigue is among the top 10 reasons patients visit primary care offices, and it significantly affects patients' well-being and occupational safety. A comprehensive history and cardiopulmonary, neurologic, and skin examinations help guide the workup and diagnosis. Fatigue can be classified as physiologic, secondary, or chronic. Physiologic fatigue can be addressed by proper sleep hygiene, a healthy diet, and balancing energy expenditure. Secondary fatigue is improved by treating the underlying condition. Cognitive behavior therapy, exercise therapy, and acupuncture may help wi...

Utilization of the ketogenic diet for adults with status epilepticus
CONCLUSION: This study identifies important barriers to the utilization of KD as a treatment for SE despite evidence supporting its efficacy in the appropriate clinical context, namely lack of resources and interdisciplinary support, and lack of established practice guidelines. Our results highlight the need for future research to improve understanding of the efficacy and safety of KD along with better interdisciplinary collaborations to increase its utilization.PMID:37271018 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2023.109279

A Systematic Review Investigating Maternal Nutrition During Pregnancy After Bariatric Surgery
AbstractThe aim of this review was to report on maternal diet, micronutrient supplementation, and gestational weight gain (GWG) during pregnancy following bariatric surgery and explore the impact on maternal micronutrient deficiency, offspring growth, and perinatal outcomes. A search in PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, and ProQuest in July 2022 returned 23 eligible studies (n = 30 –20, 213). Diet was reported in two studies, supplementation in six and GWG in 19 studies. Although many women did not achieve healthy GWG, no consistent link with adverse outcomes was reported. Studies were grades II and III on the National Health and ...

Nutrition Resources
Resources related to nutrition There is a lot of conflicting information about nutrition, and it can be hard to know what to eat and how to implement health eating. We’ve compiled some resources.    National Nutrition Month  National Nutrition Month® was created 50 years ago by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Find recipes, learn about food groups, get help with meal planning, and get tips on cooking and food prep. The campaign includes a resources page with tips sheets and activity handouts, in seven different languages. This year’s theme is “Fuel for the Future.”     Medlin...

Flavan-3-ols and Cardiometabolic Health: First Ever Dietary Bioactive Guideline
Adv Nutr. 2022 Nov;13(6):2070-2083. doi: 10.1093/advances/nmac105.ABSTRACTGuideline recommendation for a plant bioactive such as flavan-3-ols is a departure from previous recommendations because it is not based on deficiencies but rather improvement in health outcomes. Nevertheless, there is a rapidly growing body of clinical data reflecting benefits of flavan-3-ol intake that outweigh potential harms. Thus, the objective of the Expert Panel was to develop an intake recommendation for flavan-3-ols and cardiometabolic outcomes to inform multiple stakeholders including clinicians, policymakers, public health entities, and co...
