Children's views on microneedle use as an alternative to blood sampling for patient monitoring
ConclusionsThe findings presented here support the development of blood‐free, minimally invasive techniques and provide an initial indication of microneedle acceptability in children, particularly for monitoring purposes. A proactive response to these unique insights should enable microneedle array design to better meet the needs of this end‐user group. Further work in this area is recommended to ascertain the perspectives of a purposive sample of children with chronic conditions who require regular monitoring.

Immunisation against HPV in girls with intellectual disabilities
Since September 2008 in the UK, immunisation against human papillomavirus (HPV) has been routinely offered to all girls aged 12–13 years as part of the childhood immunisation programme. It has been shown in previous research, that children attending schools for children and young people with intellectual disability are less likely to receive routine vaccines compared with non-disabled peers.1 Unpublished data from an audit carried out in the Portsmouth district suggests similar issues for HPV vaccination. This paper looks at what we know about HPV infection and the risks to individuals with intellectual disabili...

Effects of air pollution on asthma and respiratory symptoms in schoolchildren
Asthma exacerbation is an episode of acute worsening of asthmatic symptoms and exacerbation may depend on environmental factors. The present study is part of a large study of the prevalence and severity of asthma, rhinitis and eczema in schoolchildren in the United Arab of Emirates (UAE). The aims and objectives of the present study were to compare asthma and respiratory symptoms in two groups of 987 schoolchildren, aged (5-14 years old). One group exposed to high level of air pollution living in the city of Fujairah, 200 km north of Dubai city (exposed group, n=537). The schools in Fujairah city were close to the mountain...

Rising trends in the prevalence of wheezing, rhinitis and eczema in 5- to 8- year old Maltese children over a decade (ISAAC - Malta)
The prevalence of asthma, rhinitis and eczema has been increasing worldwide, as a result of which, these allergic conditions became some of the most common conditions of childhood. The International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) was the largest standardised worldwide epidemiological research programme ever undertaken on allergies in children. The aim of our study was to investigate the current prevalence and severity of childhood allergic conditions in Malta, and analyze time trends by comparing the results with data obtained from phase 3 of the ISAAC study in 2001, in which Malta participated. The same...

An increase in the severity of wheezing and rhinitis but not eczema in 5- to 8- year old Maltese children over a decade (ISAAC - Malta)
The International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) is the largest standardised worldwide epidemiological research programme ever undertaken on allergies in children. The severity of a condition is a good measure of disease burden. The aim of our study was to investigate the current prevalence and severity of childhood allergic conditions in Malta, and analyze time trends by comparing the results with data obtained from phase 3 of the ISAAC study in 2001, in which Malta participated. The same validated standardized ISAAC questionnaire and protocol was used. Data was obtained from 3071 5- to 8-year-olds in 6...

Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction in schoolchildren
Conclusion: We showed a high prevalence of exercise-induced cough and/or 10% fall in FEV1 during activity lesson in a natural environment in a large urban population of schoolchildren. Our results call for another studies addressing the impact of environment on exercise-induced symptoms.

Gender difference in the relationship between serum periostin and the indices of flow volume curve, and serum IgE
We reported that it was correlated the severity of childhood asthma and the indices of flow-volume curve(F-Vc). In allergic diseases, there are gender differences in the prevalence and clinical symptoms, etc.Aim; The aim of this study is to clarify the gender difference among periostin and indices of F-Vc, and serum IgE.Subjects and methods; In 2013, children, aged 6-12yo, from 6 elementary schools were diagnosed to be able to be recruited for this study because they satisfied the criteria of ISAAC questionnaire. Gender differences were studied in the relationship between periostin and indices of F-Vc, serum IgE, mite spec...

Comparison of asthma prevalence among African American teenage youth attending public high schools in rural Georgia and urban Detroit
The high prevalence of asthma among urban African American (AA) populations has attracted research attention, whereas the prevalence among rural AA populations is poorly documented.

Allergen of the Month—
The genus Mucor consists of approximately 50 species having widespread distribution and of considerable economic importance. M. plumbeus is found world-wide in the soil, hay, stored seeds, dung, and frequently in house dust. It can be found in old, dirty carpets, and in ventilation ducts.1 It may degrade left-overs, soft fruits, marmalade, or juices.1 Mucor was found frequently in the indoor air of homes and schools during winter in northern Norway.2 Mucor is frequently identified on air samples in the vicinity of Istanbul, but less commonly in The Netherlands.

Assessment of baseline adrenal function by measurement of long term cortisol levels in scalp hair of asthmatic children using inhaled corticosteroids compared to healthy controls
This study suggests that the HPA-axis dysfunction, found in adrenal stimulation tests in children with asthma on ICS may not lead to clinical relevant HPA-axis changes in day-to-day life.

An increase in the severity of rhinitis and a reduction in severity of wheezing and eczema in 12- to 15- year old Maltese children over two decades (ISAAC-Malta)
The International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) is the largest standardised worldwide epidemiological research programme ever undertaken on allergies in children. The severity of a condition is a good measure of disease burden. The aim of our study was to investigate the current prevalence and severity of childhood allergic conditions in Malta, and analyze time trends by comparing the results with data obtained from previous phases of the ISAAC study in 1995 and 2002, in which Malta participated. Air pollution and allergic diseases
Purpose of review: Exposure to traffic-related air pollutants (TRAPs) has been implicated in asthma development, persistence, and exacerbation. This exposure is highly significant because increasingly large segments of the population worldwide reside in zones that have high levels of TRAP, including children, as schools are often located in high traffic pollution exposure areas. Recent findings: Recent findings include epidemiologic and mechanistic studies that shed new light on the impact of traffic pollution on allergic diseases and the biology underlying this impact. In addition, new innovative methods to assess and qua...
