Is medical education systemically racist?
J Natl Med Assoc. 2022 Jun 27:S0027-9684(22)00118-3. doi: 10.1016/j.jnma.2022.06.002. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAfter the murder of George Floyd, many professions, organizations, and institutions have begun to confront the long and persistent legacy of racism in the United States. Within that context, it is critically important for the medical education community to address the question of whether medical education is systemically racist, and if so, what should be done to address this problem. In this commentary, this author seeks to answer these questions, primarily by focusing on the role of standardized multiple-cho...

The Influence of Medical Education Debt and Risk-Aversiveness on Radiology ’s Workforce
By now, most readers are aware of the staggering statistics regarding medical education debt in the United States. The Association of American Medical College reports that the average education debt for medical school graduates in 2018 was $196,520, with up to 16% of all graduates owing greater than $300,000 after completing school [1]. These numbers, in combination with increasing prevalence of income-based repayment programs that appear to be increasing the monthly payment for graduates at annual interest rates greater than 6%, underscore the contemporary saying that many medical school graduates “have a mortgage witho...

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LGBTQI+) healthcare in Singapore: perspectives of non-governmental organisations and clinical year medical students
CONCLUSION: Medical students in Singapore have scored sub-optimally in their knowledge and preparedness towards LGBTQI+ health, while interpersonal and structural stigma in healthcare towards LGBTQI+ people in Singapore negatively affects health and wellbeing. These findings are an impetus to improve medical training in this area. High scores among medical students in attitudes, comfort and perceived importance of LGBTQI+ topics demonstrate that there is space for LGBTQI+ health in the local medical education curriculum. Curricular interventions can prioritise content knowledge, communication skills and sensitivity.PMID:36...

Prevalence, perceptions, and consequences of substance use in medical students.
CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest that substance use among medical students in the US is ongoing and associated with consequences in various domains. There is a lack of familiarity regarding school substance-use policies. Although there has been some progress in characterizing medical student alcohol use, less is known about the factors surrounding medical students' use of other substances. Updated, comprehensive studies on the patterns of medical student substance use are needed if we are to make the necessary changes needed to effectively prevent substance-use disorders among medical students and support those who are in nee...

Prioritizing geriatrics in medical education improves care for all
Med Educ Online. 2022 Dec;27(1):2105549. doi: 10.1080/10872981.2022.2105549.ABSTRACTWithin the United States, there is a deficit of Geriatricians providing care for older adults, and this deficit will only grow as the population continues to age, meaning all clinicians, particularly Internal Medicine (IM) and Family Medicine (FM) trained physicians, will provide the bulk of primary care for older adults. However, geriatric training requirements for clinicians fall short, and in the case of IM were reduced as of 2022). Serving as a call to action, this article provides insight on ways to enhance geriatric education for all ...

National survey on anatomical sciences in medical education
The drivers for curricular change in medical education such as the addition of innovative approaches to teaching, inclusion of technology and adoption of different assessment methods are gaining momentum. In an effort to understand how these changes are impacting and being implemented in gross anatomy, microscopic anatomy, neuroanatomy/neuroscience, and embryology courses, surveys were sent out to course directors/discipline leaders at allopathic Medical Schools in the United States during the 2016‐2017 academic year. Participants in the study were asked to comment on course hours, student experiences in the classroom an...
