Women still fighting to get their dues in the medical profession
New exhibition at Royal College of Physicians highlights 500 years of women ’s struggle to get their foot in the door of the medical professionMedicine is not a welcoming world for women, even in 2018. Women holda tiny proportion of Britain ’s professorial medical posts, while theNHS has a 23% gender pay gap. Just last month Tokyo Medical Universityadmitted it had tampered with female students ’ exam scores to stop them getting in, fearing they would put their careers on hold to get married and have children. This pernicious culture of sexism and scaremongering is nothing new. Innovative, paired careers tutorials: increasing the number of medical students choosing general practice as a career.
Authors: Allsopp G, Taggar J Abstract With a crisis in general practice recruitment, we need 50% of UK medical students to choose general practice as a career. They promoted portfolio GPs and how general practice could fit into career choices. Paired evaluation was completed (Open-ended questions on current career choices and a 5-point Likert scale "Is General Practice is a possible career choice for me?") Education: Act Now, Don ’t Wait for the Bill
By Stefania GianniniPARIS, Oct 20 2020 (IPS) School reopening doesn’t mean that education is back on course. For a start, schools remain closed in over 50 countries, affecting more than 800 million students. The poorest ones may never make it back to school, driven by poverty into child labour or early marriage. Distance learning has been out of reach for one third of the 1.6 billion students affected worldwide by school closures. They may disengage altogether if school closures continue. Stefania Giannini The health crisis is at risk of eroding decades of progress. For the first time since its conception, the Human Dev...

Reply from authors: Increasing medical student interest in cardiothoracic surgery: Exposure matters
We read with interest the letter from Lodhia and colleagues in reference to our recent publication in the Journal regarding medical student perceptions of cardiothoracic surgery as a career choice.1,2 The letter was penned by a group of medical students in the United Kingdom and describes aspects within their training environment leading to limited exposure to not only cardiothoracic surgery but surgical specialties in general. While our study concentrated on characterizing the exposure and perceptions of a single academic center in the United States, our findings clearly are more indicative of global trends, as we are fin...
