Impact of a pediatric primary care health-coaching program on change in health-related quality of life in children with mental health problems: results of the PrimA-QuO cohort study
BMC Prim Care. 2023 Sep 8;24(1):182. doi: 10.1186/s12875-023-02119-0.ABSTRACTMental health problems (MHP) have a considerable negative impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in children and their families. A low threshold Health Coaching (HC) program has been introduced to bring MH services to primary care and strengthen the role of pediatricians. It comprised training concepts as a hands-on approach for pediatricians, standardization of diagnosis and treatment, and extended consultations. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential effects of the HC on HRQoL in children with MHP and their parents. We used...

Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) and its phytochemicals as anxiolytic; an underreported effect with therapeutic potential: a systematic review
Brain Res. 2023 Aug 26:148554. doi: 10.1016/j.brainres.2023.148554. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAnxiety is a mental disorder characterized by excessive concern about possible future threats that, if prolonged, becomes a pathology that must be controlled through psychotherapy and medication. Currently, the pharmacological treatment for anxiety involves the use of antidepressants and benzodiazepines; however, these treatments often come with adverse effects. Thus, there is a need to seek natural compounds that can help alleviate anxiety and reduce these side effects. On the other hand, pomegranate (PG) fruit is known to ha...

Exposure of Swedish adolescents to elements, persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and rapidly excreted substances - The Riksmaten adolescents 2016-17 national survey
Int J Hyg Environ Health. 2023 Jun 4;251:114196. doi: 10.1016/j.ijheh.2023.114196. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAdolescence is a period of significant physiological changes, and likely a sensitive window to chemical exposure. Few nation-wide population-based studies of chemical body burdens in adolescents have been published. In the national dietary survey Riksmaten Adolescents (RMA) 2016-17, over 13 chemical substance groups, including elements, chlorinated/brominated/fluorinated persistent organic pollutants (POPs) were analysed in blood, and in urine metabolites of phthalates/phthalate alternatives, phosphorous flame r...

CeMOS Mannheim Connects High-Impact Science, Co-development, and Transfer through Collaborations
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2023 May 16:e202305659. doi: 10.1002/anie.202305659. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis invited Team Profile was created by the Applied Mass Spectrometry Team at the Center for Mass Spectrometry and Optical Spectroscopy (CeMOS Mannheim) in Germany. They recently published an article together with Sirius Fine Chemicals SiChem GmbH and Bruker Daltonics. The work presents a novel concept for vacuum-stable-by-design MALDI matrices that enable long MALDI mass spectrometry measurements (e.g., for imaging) of at least 72 hours. Through the use of a photo-removable group, organic synthesis transformed the w...

A review of statistical strategies to integrate biomarkers of chemical exposure with biomarkers of effect applied in omic-scale environmental epidemiology
Environ Pollut. 2023 Apr 29:121741. doi: 10.1016/j.envpol.2023.121741. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHumans are exposed to a growing list of synthetic chemicals, some of them becoming a major public health concern due to their capacity to impact multiple biological endpoints and contribute to a range of chronic diseases. The integration of endogenous (omic) biomarkers of effect in environmental health studies has been growing during the last decade, aiming to gain insight on the potential mechanisms linking the exposures and the clinical conditions. The emergence of high-throughput omic platforms has raised a list of stati...

Measuring the quantity of harmful volatile organic compounds inhaled through masks
In this study, the concentration of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from some commonly used masks was assessed qualitatively and quantitatively under diverse conditions (including different mask material types, time between opening the product and wearing, and mask temperature). In KF94 masks, 1-methoxy-2-propanol (221 ± 356 µg m-3), N,N-dimethylacetamide (601 ± 450 µg m-3), n-hexane (268 ± 349 µg m-3), and 2-butanone (160 ± 244 µg m-3) were detected at concentrations 22.9-147 times higher than those found in masks made from other materials, such as cotton and other functional fabrics. In addition, in KF9...
