Sinus barotrauma in diving
CONCLUSIONS: Sinus barotrauma is the second most common condition encountered in diving medicine, having affected 49% of the respondents. Possible risk factors include allergies to pollen, regular smoking, and a high number of URTIs per year.PMID:34157734 | DOI:10.28920/dhm51.2.182-189

Immunomodulatory Effects of Rhinovirus and Enterovirus Infections During the First Year of Life
Early childhood infections have been implicated in the development of immune-mediated diseases, such as allergies, asthma, and type 1 diabetes. We set out to investigate the immunomodulatory effects of early viral infections experienced before the age of one year on the peripheral regulatory T cell population (Treg) and circulating cytokines in a birth-cohort study of Estonian and Finnish infants. We show here a temporal association of virus infection with the expression of FOXP3 in regulatory T cells. Infants with rhinovirus infection during the preceding 30 days had a higher FOXP3 expression in Treg cells and decreased l...

Allergy-Related Symptoms Are Poorly Predicted by IgE and Skin Prick Testing in Early Life
Conclusion: In early childhood, testing for IgE sensitization predicts allergy-related symptoms in an age-dependent manner, but not particularly well. Tests predict symptoms caused by aeroallergens clearly better than those caused by dietary allergens. The clinical relevance of sensitization testing in early life is therefore limited in the prediction of true allergy.Int Arch Allergy Immunol

Regional employment and individual worklessness during the Great Recession and the health of the working-age population: Cross-national analysis of 16 European countries

PearceAbstractStudies from single countries suggest that local labour market conditions, including rates of employment, tend to be associated with the health of the populations residing in those areas, even after adjustment for individual characteristics including employment status. The aim of this study is to strengthen the cross-national evidence base on the influence of regional employment levels and individual worklessness on health during the period of the Great Rece...

Diverse age-incidence patterns of atopic sensitisation in an unselected Finnish population up to 12 years
The clinically observed progression of atopic diseases is often described in terms of an ‘atopic march’; from atopic eczema to respiratory allergies (allergic rhinitis and/or asthma)1-5. The incidence of atopic manifestations has previously been defined by using the first date of hospital admission for these conditions or dispensed prescription of specific medication6 or by the age at diagnoses of atopic manifestations7.
