Is Improving Educational Attainment Key to Reducing the Burden Because of Cardiovascular Diseases?
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) impose a substantial global public health burden, accounting for significant mortality and disability worldwide, particularly because of conditions like coronary heart disease and stroke. The economic consequences of CVDs, including healthcare expenses, decreased productivity, and diminished quality of life, further contribute to this burden. Lifestyle factors such as unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, tobacco use, and excessive alcohol consumption are closely associated with CVDs.

Mitochondrial DNA Copy Number as a Marker and Mediator of Stroke Prognosis: Observational and Mendelian Randomization Analyses
CONCLUSIONS: Buffy coat mtDNA-CN is a novel and robust marker of post-stroke prognosis that may also be a causal determinant of post-stroke outcomes.CLASSIFICATION OF EVIDENCE: This study provides class II evidence that low buffy coat mtDNA-CN (>1-standard deviation) was associated with worse baseline severity and 1-month outcomes in patients with ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke.PMID:34880091 | DOI:10.1212/WNL.0000000000013165

Sociodemographic disparities in hypertension prevalence: Results from the first Portuguese National Health Examination Survey
ConclusionsA large majority of the adult Portuguese population are likely to reach blood pressure levels defined as hypertension in adulthood. Significant differences in hypertension prevalence were found according to gender, age and socioeconomic status, which highlights the importance of population strategies in public health policies.

‘Ten Commandments’ of the EHRA Guide for the Use of NOACs in AF
Non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) are an alternative for vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) to prevent stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), and have emerged as the preferred choice, particularly in patients newly started on anticoagulation. Both physicians and patients are becoming more accustomed to the use of these drugs in clinical practice. However, many unresolved questions on how to optimally use these agents in specific clinical situations remain. In 2013, the first “EHRA Practical Guide” was published to provide practical guidance for situations; an update was published in 2015. Below ...

Abstract 205: Stroke Risk and Symptom Recognition Post Cardiac Catheterization Session Title: Poster Session PM
Over 1.4 million cardiac catheterization procedures (CCPs) take place yearly. CPP related stroke incidence in 1973 was reported as 0.23%. CCPs are invasive in nature with complications occurring due to unintentional trauma to preexisting atherosclerotic aortic plaques or thrombus formation at catheter/guidewire tips. Less common causes of ischemic stroke are air, left ventricular clot, hypotension, arterial dissection, fractured guidewire. Transient neurological deficits have been reported following high-osmolar contrast injection into carotid/vertebral arteries. With improved practice, current stroke incidence is 0.06%. P...

Return to the workforce following infective endocarditis —A nationwide cohort study
Conclusions Seven of 10 patients who were part of the workforce prior to IE and alive at discharge were part of the workforce 1 year later. Younger age, higher socioeconomic status, and absence of major comorbidities were associated with return to the workforce.

Abstract 116: Relationship of Stroke Unit Status With Quality of Care and Outcome for Acute Stroke Patients: Results From China National Stroke Registry II Session Title: Poster Session I
Conclusions: Our study showed that processes of care of AIS were better in patients in hospitals with stroke units. However, patients in hospitals with stroke units didn’t performance differences in clinical outcomes after discharge.

Neurocognitive functioning in adults with congenital heart disease
ConclusionsFindings suggest concerns about neuropsychological functioning that need to be more comprehensively assessed in adults with CHD. Understanding the cognitive limitations of this aging population can help guide access to resources, transition of care, and medical care engagement, thus improving quality of care and quality of life.

Non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants and atrial fibrillation guidelines in practice: barriers to and strategies for optimal implementation
Stroke is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is an independent risk factor for stroke, increasing the risk five-fold. Strokes in patients with AF are more likely than other embolic strokes to be fatal or cause severe disability and are associated with higher healthcare costs, but they are also preventable. Current guidelines recommend that all patients with AF who are at risk of stroke should receive anticoagulation. However, despite this guidance, registry data indicate that anticoagulation is still widely underused. With a focus on the 2012 update of the European Society of Car...

Abstract 267: Improving Inpatient Stroke Care by Implementing Stroke Units Across Health Systems Using an Improvement Collaborative Approach Session Title: Poster Session II
Conclusions: This inter-provincial Quality Improvement Collaborative was successful in implementing and improving stroke units, and in improving best practice care of inpatient stroke patients. Critical success factors include the engagement of faculty from high-performing centers even if they exist outside the jurisdiction where improvement is sought, and the use of the 7-step framework for implementing stroke units.

Abstract 235: Acute Care Measures of Rehabilitation Needs Associated with Discharge to Rehabilitation for Patients with Minor Stroke Poster Session II
Conclusions: Rehabilitation needs were documented for patients with minor stroke and almost one third were discharged to receive inpatient rehabilitation in an IRF or SNF. Taking pre-stroke disability into consideration for transition planning from acute care could facilitate earlier communication and planning with the next point of care.
