Increasing the use of continuing professional development courses to strengthen trauma care in Ghana
Ghana Med J. 2020 Sep;54(3):197-200. doi: 10.4314/gmj.v54i3.11.ABSTRACTInjury is a major cause of death and disability in Ghana. Strengthening care of the injured is essential to reduce this burden. Trauma continuing professional development (CPD) courses are an important component of strengthening trauma care. In many countries, including Ghana, their use needs to be more uniformly promoted. We propose lowcost strategies to increase the utilization of trauma CPD in Ghana, especially in district hospitals and higher need areas. These strategies include developing plans by regional health directorates and teaching hospitals...

Managing Complex Peripheral Nerve Injuries Within the Military Health System: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Treatment, Education, and Research at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
CONCLUSIONS: The WRNMMC PNP facilitates comprehensive, patient-centered care for PNI patients within the MHS. Moreover, the program helps to prepare the next generation of providers for evaluating and treating PNI patients through its involvement with graduate medical education training. It also conducts critical peripheral nerve research and lays the foundation for collaborations with other institutions involved with peripheral nerve research. In the years ahead, the WRNMMC PNP aims to expand its outreach and capabilities within the MHS through more expansive use of telemedicine consultation and the establishment of satel...

A Timely Problem: Parental Leave During Medical Training
Discussion about parental leave for these trainees is not new. Despite decades of dialogue, leave policies throughout the undergraduate and graduate medical education continuum lack standardization and are currently ill defined and inadequate. There are a number of barriers to implementation. These include stigma, financial concerns, workforce and duty hours challenges, and the historically rigid timeline for progression from one stage of medical training to the next. Potential solutions include parent-friendly curricular innovations, competency-based medical education, and provision of short-term disability insurance. Mos...

What to Know About the Military Special Education System
Military families live all over the U.S. and, if needed, most of their children receive special needs services in the local early-intervention or school systems. Even if you don’t work in the military system, you likely have worked or will work with children from military families. It’s helpful to understand the military special-education systems and how they relate to on-base schools, the military medical system and the local community. I hope this brief description of military-based early-intervention and school-aged services helps explain these complex systems and what military families navigate daily.  Milit...
