Perinatal outcomes of midwife-led care, stratified by medical risk: a retrospective cohort study from British Columbia (2008-2018)
CMAJ. 2023 Feb 27;195(8):E292-E299. doi: 10.1503/cmaj.220453.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Anecdotal evidence suggests that the profile of midwifery clients in British Columbia has changed over the past 20 years and that midwives are increasingly caring for clients with moderate to high medical risk. We included all births that had a family physic...

Health Care Professionals Should Prepare For Increased Numbers Of Pregnant Women With Disabilities, Suggests Study In Medical Care
Like the general public, health care professionals may hold certain stereotypes regarding sexual activity and childbearing among women with disabilities. But a new study finds that women with chronic physical disabilities are about as likely as nondisabled women to say they are currently pregnant, after age and other sociodemographic factors are taken into account. The findings are reported in the June issue of Medical Care, published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, a part of Wolters Kluwer Health...

Obstetric Air Medical Retrievals in the Australian Outback
Conclusions: In this specific cohort, a midwife provided an appropriate level of maternal care to the majority of patients. Newborns frequently required clinical expertise beyond the practice scope of a midwife and general flight doctor. Most women in labor do not deliver during transport. The transport service has finite economic resources and logistical constraints. This study highlighted an ongoing challenge regarding when to request additional neonatal specialist care for preterm or high-risk patients referred for transport in utero.

Osteoporosis: A Future Public Health Problem for Israel? Medical and Legal Obligations.
Authors: Weisz GM Abstract BACKGROUND: Starvation in early life can lead to premature metabolic syndrome and bone demineralization. Osteoporosis in the Jewish population may not yet be a recognized syndrome, but the harsh conditions to which Holocaust survivors were exposed may have increased the incidence of the condition. Immigrants and refugees who came to Israel from East Africa and Yemen - whether decades ago or more recently - may have been at increased risk of under-nutrition during pregnancy, affecting both the mother and consequently the offspring. This malnutrition may be further exacerbated by rapid over...
