Effect of desert dust exposure on allergic symptoms: A natural experiment in Japan.
CONCLUSIONS: Ambient desert dust level was associated with an increased risk of allergic symptoms in pollen-sensitized pregnant women when pollen was present in the air. The risk increase was dose dependent and was observed from low levels of desert dust. These results support a hypothesis that ambient desert dust particles exert adjuvant effects in human in real-life settings. TRIAL REGISTRATION: clinicaltrials.gov Identifier: UMIN000010826. Selective hypersensitivity to cefazolin and contribution of the basophil activation test.
Authors: Almeida JP, Lopes A, Campos Melo A, Pereira Santos MC, Pereira Barbosa M Abstract Summary: The authors present 2 case reports of selective cefazolin hypersensitivity: a 49 year-old woman with a history of two perioperative reactions (urticaria and severe anaphylaxis) after the use of rocuronium, propophol and cefazolin; a 36 year-old pregnant woman who developed facial erythema, lips angioedema and hypotension immediately after administration of ropivacain, sufentanil, cefazolin, oxytocin and ephedrine. In both cases, intradermal skin tests were positive for cefazolin. A basophil activation test was perfor...

Maternal Asthma, Pregnancy, Delivery and Birth Outcomes: A Retrospective Cohort Study.
Abstract The aim of current study was to determine women´s maternal asthma in pregnancy, delivery and birth outcomes. Using a retrospective cohort design, data of 580 pregnant women were gathered form a large teaching hospital in Tehran, Iran. The medical records of pregnant women who had attended this hospital between 2009 and 2011 were assessed. Data of delivery and birth outcomes were gathered by observation and medical records of women. Multiple logistic regression and adjusted odds ratio (OR) were used to assess the independent association of asthma and outcomes. 274 patients (47.2%) were in "asthmatic group...

Association of prenatal and early childhood stress with reduced lung function in 7-year-olds.
CONCLUSION: These are the first prospective data that link perinatal stress with reduced child lung function. High levels of stress in the prenatal and postnatal periods were associated with symmetric reductions in FEV1 and FVC consistent with impaired lung growth. Given that lung function growth patterns are established by 7 years of age, these findings have lifelong implications. PMID: 28668548 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Prenatal particulate matter exposure and wheeze in Mexican children: effect modification by prenatal psychosocial stress.
CONCLUSION: Increased prenatal stress enhanced the association between PM2.5 exposure in early pregnancy, and child wheeze at 48 months of age. It is important to consider chemical and nonchemical stressors together to more comprehensively characterize children's environmental risk. PMID: 28757229 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association between Caregiver Exposure to Toxics during Pregnancy and Childhood-onset Asthma: A Case-control Study.
Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the associations between caregiver-reported use of medications, alcohol, cigarette and/or waterpipe (WP), and exposure to pesticides/detergents during pregnancy with childhood-onset asthma. The study design consisted of a case-control study, conducted between December 2015 and April 2016, recruited 1503 children, aged between 3-16 years old. A questionnaire assessed the sociodemographic characteristics (age, gender, education level of both parents), the family history of asthma, and other known risk factors of asthma (heating system at home, child history of recurrent...
