Clinical outcomes in patients with native valve infective endocarditis and diabetes mellitus
CONCLUSION: There is an increasing prevalence of DM in NVIE and it is associated with poorer outcomes. Further studies are crucial to identify the clinical, and sociodemographic contributors to this trend and develop strategies to mitigate its attendant risk.PMID:33552399 | PMC:PMC7821010 | DOI:10.4330/wjc.v13.i1.11

Medical costs for managing chronic kidney disease and related complications in patients with chronic kidney disease and type 2 diabetes
CONCLUSIONS: Management of CKD and its complications incurs high medical costs for patients with CKD and T2D. Results from this study can be used to quantify the economic profile of emerging treatments and inform decision-making.PMID:34878754 | DOI:10.37765/ajmc.2021.88807

Po-701-04 outcomes of left atrial appendage closure in patients with atrial fibrillation and end-stage renal disease on dialysis
Oral anticoagulation (OAC) therapy is the mainstay of treatment for stroke-risk reduction in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). However, OAC use in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on dialysis is associated with a significantly increased risk of bleeding and an uncertain benefit in stroke reduction. In these patients, left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) could be alternative.

A Randomized Controlled Trial Comparing Apixaban to the Vitamin K-antagonist Phenprocoumon in Patients on Chronic Hemodialysis: The AXADIA-AFNET 8 study
Conclusions: In this randomized trial comparing apixaban and VKA in patients with AF on hemodialysis with long follow-up, no differences were observed in safety or efficacy outcomes. Even on oral anticoagulation, patients with AF on hemodialysis remain at high risk of cardiovascular events. Larger randomized trials are needed to determine the optimal anticoagulation regimen for patients with AF on hemodialysis. Mr. M
Dr. Migliore I step off the subway, up the elevator, and up several flights of stairs. There’s a homeless man there who always uses the last stair of the lower staircase as a tray for his food. And by tray, I mean he sets his half-eaten rice burrito directly onto the step and picks around at it while I imagine the guacamole is mixing with Hep B and C. diff and MRSA. He looks up at me, I promise myself for the 100th time I’m going to start carrying cash or Kind bars or something; I give him my best sheepish face, and emerge at street level. I walk toward my hospital and pass a gentleman who sits on a ledge next to the ...

Oral Anticoagulation Therapy in Atrial Fibrillation Patients with Advanced Chronic Kidney Disease: CODE-AF Registry
CONCLUSION: Among AF patients with advanced CKD or ESRD on dialysis, DOAC was associated with a lower risk of major or CRNM bleeding compared to warfarin and a lower risk of composite adverse clinical outcomes compared to no OAC. ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT02786095).PMID:36579375 | DOI:10.3349/ymj.2022.0455
