Increased Growth Differentiation Factor 15 Is Associated with Unfavorable Clinical Outcomes of Acute Ischemic Stroke Proteomics and Protein Markers
CONCLUSIONS: High GDF-15 concentrations are independently associated with adverse clinical outcomes of acute ischemic stroke, suggesting that baseline serum GDF-15 could provide additional information to identify ischemic stroke patients at high risk of poor prognosis.

Synthesis and Evaluation of Water-Soluble Prodrugs of Ursodeoxycholic Acid (UDCA), an Anti-apoptotic Bile Acid.
Abstract Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) is a bile acid with demonstrated anti-apoptotic activity in both in vitro and in vivo models. However, its utility is hampered by limited aqueous solubility. As such, water-soluble prodrugs of UDCA could have an advantage over the parent bile acid in indications where intravenous administration might be preferable, such as decreasing damage from stroke or acute kidney injury. Five phosphate prodrugs were synthesized, including one incorporating a novel phosphoryloxymethyl carboxylate (POMC) moiety. These prodrugs were highly water-soluble, but showed significant differences...

Association between cardiometabolic index and atherosclerotic progression in patients with peripheral arterial disease.
CONCLUSION: CMI was shown to be associated with the degrees of atherosclerosis in the common carotid artery and ischemia in leg arteries and is therefore a useful discriminator of atherosclerotic progression in patients with PAD. PMID: 25920694 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Impact of Red Wine Consumption on Cardiovascular Health.
Abstract The devastating effects of heavy alcohol drinking have been long time recognized. In the last decades, potential benefits of modest red wine drinking were suggested. In European countries in which red wide intake is not negligible (such as France), the association between cholesterol and cardiovascular (CV) risk was less evident, suggesting the action of some protective molecules in red wine or other foods and drinks. Epidemiological and mechanistic evidence of a J-shaped relationship between red wine intake and CV risk further supported the "French paradox". Specific components of red wine both in vitro ...

Uric acid and cardiovascular disease.
Abstract Uric acid (UA) is an end product of purine metabolism in humans and great apes. UA acts as an antioxidant and it accounts for 50% of the total antioxidant capacity of biological fluids in humans. When present in cytoplasm of the cells or in acidic/hydrophobic milieu in atherosclerotic plaques, UA converts into a pro-oxidant agent and promotes oxidative stress and through this mechanism participates in the pathophysiology of human disease including cardiovascular disease (CVD). Most epidemiological studies but not all of them suggested the existence of an association between elevated serum UA level and CVD...

Design, Synthesis, and Biological Evaluation of New ALDH2 Activators
In this study, three new classes of compounds were modified from Alda-1 to improve their water-solubility and then drug-like properties. The results showed that all compounds had increased water solubility and two classes of compounds exhibited good activation activity. Among them, compound I-6 showed the best activity.

Molecules, Vol. 24, Pages 2212: Antiplatelet Activity of Acylphloroglucinol Derivatives Isolated from Dryopteris crassirhizoma
In this study, we investigated the Dryopteris crassirhizoma’s antiplatelet activity. A water extract of D. crassirhizoma (WDC) was partitioned into dichloromethane (DCM), ethyl acetate, n-butyl alcohol, and water. Among these four fractions, the DCM fraction potently inhibited the collagen-stimulated platelet aggregation in a concentration-dependent manner. From this fraction, five different acylphloroglucinol compounds and one flavonoid were isolated by activity-guided column chromatography. They were identified by comparing their mass, 1H-, and 13C-NMR spectral data with those reported in the literature. Qu...

Self-reported alcohol consumption, carbohydrate deficient transferrin and risk of cardiovascular disease: the PREVEND prospective cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings confirm the established association between self-reported light to moderate alcohol consumption and reduced CVD risk. However, %CDT within the normal reference range may not be a risk indicator for CVD.PMID:34048731 | DOI:10.1016/j.cca.2021.05.024

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 2598: Gastrodin and Gastrodigenin Improve Energy Metabolism Disorders and Mitochondrial Dysfunction to Antagonize Vascular Dementia
This study explored the effects of Gas and HBA on cognitive dysfunction in VD and their possible molecular mechanisms. The VD model was established by bilateral common carotid artery ligation (2-vessel occlusion, 2-VO) combined with an intraperitoneal injection of sodium nitroprusside solution. One week after modeling, Gas (25 and 50 mg/kg, i.g.) and HBA (25 and 50 mg/kg, i.g.) were administered orally for four weeks, and the efficacy was evaluated. A Morris water maze test and passive avoidance test were used to observe their cognitive function, and H&E staining and Nissl staining were used to observe the neur...
