Statin Therapy for Preventing Recurrent Stroke in Patients with Ischemic Stroke: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomised Controlled Trials and Observational Cohort Studies
We examined the outcomes of recurrent stroke (after ischemic stroke) of any type, and separately recurrent ischemic stroke and recurrent hemorrhagic stroke. RCTs and observational cohort studies were meta-analysed separately. Odds ratios (OR) was used to assess the effect of statin therapy. Meta-analysis was conducted using RevMan 5.4 software. Results We retrieved 559 papers in searches, of which 11 RCTs and 12 observational cohort studies were included. Both RCTs and observational studies found that statins reduced the odds of stroke of any type in those with an initial ischemic stroke (11 RCTs: OR=0.87, 95% CI [0.77,0....

The mechanism of taurine protection against endoplasmic reticulum stress in an animal stroke model of cerebral artery occlusion and stroke-related conditions in primary neuronal cell culture.
In this study, we employed hypoxia/reoxygenation conditions for primary cortical neuronal cell cultures as an in vitro model of stroke as well as the in vivo model of rat focal middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). Our data showed that when primary neuronal cultures were first subjected to hypoxic conditions (0.3%, 24 h) followed by reoxygenation (21%, 24-48 h), the cell viability was greatly reduced. In the animal model of stroke (MCAO), we found that 2 h ischemia followed by 4 days reperfusion resulted in an infarct of 47.42 ± 9.86% in sections 6 mm from the frontal pole. Using taurine greatly increased cell viabilit...

Knowledge, attitudes and perceptions of stroke: a cross-sectional survey in rural and urban Uganda
Conclusion: Stroke knowledge is poor in both rural and urban Uganda. Tailored public health approaches that improve stroke awareness, knowledge and self management approaches are urgently needed to develop effective preventive measures and community response to stroke.

Premature Atrial Contractions on the Screening Electrocardiogram and Risk of Ischemic Stroke: The Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke Study
Conclusion: PACs detected on the routine electrocardiogram are associated with an increased risk for non-lacunar ischemic strokes, especially in women.Neuroepidemiology 2016;47:53-58

Validation of a novel claims-based stroke severity index in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage.
CONCLUSIONS: The SSI appears to be a valid proxy for the NIHSS and an effective adjustment for stroke severity in studies of ICH outcome with administrative claims data. PMID: 28135194 [PubMed - in process]

Body mass index and stroke incidence in Japanese community residents: The Jichi Medical School (JMS) Cohort Study.
CONCLUSIONS: The association between BMI and stroke incidence observed in this population was different than those previously reported: low BMI was a risk factor for all-stroke and cerebral infarction in men, while high BMI was a risk factor for all-stroke in women. Adjudication of Transient Ischemic Attack and Stroke in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis
Conclusions: We hope that this work will motivate and facilitate investigators to use MESA data to investigate issues concerning TIA and stroke and will inform investigators seeking to adjudicate TIA and stroke in other studies.Neuroepidemiology 2018;50:23 –28

Increasing Burden of Stroke: The Dijon Stroke Registry (1987 –2012)
Conclusions: Increasing attack rates and decreasing mortality have led to a rise in the number of stroke survivors in the population, thus indicating a growing need for the implementation of dedicated services.Neuroepidemiology 2018;50:47 –56

Early and One-Year Outcomes of Acute Stroke in the Industrial Region of Poland During the Decade 2006 –2015: The Silesian Stroke Registry
Conclusions: In a large population of industrial province, we showed recent, positive trends in AS admissions, treatment and 1-year outcomes. Development of stroke unit networks and increase in thrombolytic treatment were at least in part responsible for survival improvement and reduction of recurrence of AS. However, case-fatality and stroke recurrence remain high compared to those of other developed countries.Neuroepidemiology 2018;50:183 –194

Temporal Trends of Stroke Epidemiology in Southern Sweden: A Population-Based Study on Stroke Incidence and Early Case-Fatality
Conclusion: First-ever stroke incidence in southern Sweden has decreased to 33% since the beginning of this millennium. Incidence rates have decreased among the elderly but remain unchanged among younger age groups. Our findings warrant further studies on trends in risk factor profiles and effects of prevention strategies, and heightened focus on stroke in the young.Neuroepidemiology 2018;50:174 –182

Inpatient Cost of Stroke in Beijing: A Descriptive Analysis
Conclusion: Hospitalization cost of stroke was substantial. These findings provide health policymakers and healthcare professionals with evidence to help guide future spending.Neuroepidemiology 2018;51:115 –122

Factors Associated with Stroke Misdiagnosis in the Emergency Department: A Retrospective Case-Control Study
Conclusions: Patients with stroke misdiagnosis were commonly FAST-negative with nonspecific symptoms including altered mental status, dizziness and nausea/vomiting often associated with PCS. Improved diagnostic accuracy may increase access to acute therapies.Neuroepidemiology 2018;51:123 –127

Impact of the Ageing Population on the Burden of Stroke: The Dijon Stroke Registry
Conclusions: Ageing and growth of the population led to a rise in the absolute number of strokes, especially in the elderly, that is expected to increase dramatically in the coming years. Improved stroke care was accompanied with an increase in stroke survivors that contributed to a rise in recurrent events. Urgent action is needed to meet this epidemiological challenge.Neuroepidemiology 2019;52:78 –85

A Population-Based Survey of Stroke Knowledge in Argentina: The SIFHON Study
Conclusions: This study represents the largest stroke awareness survey in a Spanish-speaking population. There was good recognition of some basic facts of stroke. However, the population had poor knowledge of prevalence and severity of the disease, transient ischemic attacks, and treatment availability.Neuroepidemiology

The Association of Social Isolation on the Risk of Stroke among Middle-aged and Older Adults in China.
Abstract Given there is limited research examining the specific role social isolation plays in stroke risk, we aimed to estimate the controlled direct effect of social isolation on stroke risk in China. A nationally representative sample (n=12,662) of individuals aged 45 and older (at baseline, 2011; with corresponding follow-ups in 2013 and 2015), was taken from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Stroke was assessed through self- or proxy-reported physician diagnosis. Social isolation was measured by incorporating marital status; frequency of contact with friends, family, and children; and partic...
