Safety and Effect of Metoclopramide to Prevent Pneumonia in Patients With Stroke Fed via Nasogastric Tubes Trial Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— This study suggests that metoclopramide may reduce the rate of pneumonia and may improve other clinical outcomes in patients with subacute stroke fed via nasogastric tube. These findings need to be confirmed in larger randomized and blinded trials. Clinical Trial Registration— URL: https://www.clinicaltrialsregister.eu. Results of the ICTuS 2 Trial (Intravascular Cooling in the Treatment of Stroke 2) Major Clinical Trial
Conclusions—Intravascular therapeutic hypothermia was confirmed to be safe and feasible in recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator–treated acute ischemic stroke patients. Protocol changes designed to reduce pneumonia risk appeared to fail, although the sample is small.Clinical Trial Registration—URL: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov. Unique identifier: NCT01123161.

COOLIST (Cooling for Ischemic Stroke Trial) Brief Report
Conclusions—In awake patients with acute ischemic stroke, surface cooling is feasible to 35.0°C, but not to 34.5°C and 34.0°C. Cooling is associated with an increased risk of pneumonia.Clinical Trial Registration—URL: http://www.trialregister.nl. Unique identifier: NTR2616.

Stroke in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy: A Retrospective Longitudinal Study in 54 Patients Brief Reports
Conclusions— This study indicates an increased risk for ischemic strokes in DMD patients. Regular cardiological assessment of all DMD patients is mandatory to evaluate the individual risk profile for cardioembolic events and to adapt therapeutic strategies.

Effect evaluation on use of bedside fiber bronchoscope in treating stroke-associated pneumonia.
Conclusion The use of bedside fiber bronchoscope is beneficial in modifying the pulmonary ventilation and relieving systemic inflammatory response of patients with SAP, exhibiting a great value in clinical application. PMID: 29785872 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Determinants of early case‐fatality among stroke patients in Maputo, Mozambique and impact of in‐hospital complications
The burden of stroke is increasing in developing countries that struggle to manage it efficiently. We identified determinants of early case‐fatality among stroke patients in Maputo, Mozambique, to assess the impact of in‐hospital complications. Patients admitted to any hospital in Maputo with a new stroke event were prospectively registered (n = 651) according to the World Health Organization's STEPwise approach, in 2005–2006. We assessed the determinants of in‐hospital and 28‐day fatality, independently of age, gender and education, and computed population attributable fractions. In‐hospital mortality was ...

Predictors of Dysphagia Screening After Acute Ischemic Stroke (S31.002)
CONCLUSIONS: A significant portion of patients with acute ischemic stroke did not receive a swallowing test. Patients were more likely to receive testing if they had moderate rather than mild or severe strokes, presenting symptoms of speech deficits, weakness, or dysphagia, received thrombolytics, or were admitted to a stroke unit.Disclosure: Dr. Joundi has nothing to disclose. Aspiration Pneumonia in Adults Hospitalized With Stroke at a Large Academic Hospital in Zambia
Discussion PSAP is common and life threatening in Zambia, especially among older participants with severe stroke presentations. PSAP was associated with significantly increased mortality independent of initial stroke severity, suggesting that interventions to mitigate PSAP may improve stroke outcomes in Zambia and other resource-limited settings.

The association between delays in screening for and assessing dysphagia after acute stroke, and the risk of stroke-associated pneumonia
Conclusions Delays in screening for and assessing dysphagia after stroke, are associated with higher risk of SAP. Since SAP is one of the main causes of mortality after acute stroke, early dysphagia assessment may contribute to preventing deaths from acute stroke and could be implemented even in settings without access to high-technology specialist stroke care.
