Targeted temperature management in the ICU: Guidelines from a French expert panel
We present herein recommendations for the use of TTM in adult and paediatric critically ill patients developed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) method. These guidelines were conducted by a group of experts from the French Intensive Care Society (Société de réanimation de langue française [SRLF]) and the French Society of Anesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine (Société francaise d’anesthésie réanimation [SFAR]) with the participation of the French Emergency Medicine Association (Société française de médecine d’urgence [SFMU]), the French Group for Pediatric...

Etomidate-induced hypotension: a pathophysiological approach using arterial elastance
Conclusion: Etomidate-induced hypotension was associated to a decrease in Ea. Ea variations can mainly be explained by induced changes in arterial compliance.

Neuropathic Pain Prevalence of Older Adults in an Urban Area of Iran: A Population-Based Study.
Conclusions: In addition to neuropathic pain, other subtypes of pain prevalence and the comorbidities are determined in the community-dwelling elder adults. This study highlights the importance of neuropathic pain and its adverse consequences and can be used to manage this populations' needs in Iran effectively. PMID: 30719350 [PubMed]

Cognitive Decline in Chronic Migraine with Nonsteroid Anti-inflammation Drug Overuse: A Cross-Sectional Study.
Conclusion: The risk of cognitive decline increased in chronic migraine patients. Nonsteroid anti-inflammatory drugs overuse had no influence on cognitive performances among chronic migraine sufferers. PMID: 31198478 [PubMed - in process]

Do chronic pain and comorbidities affect brain function in sickle cell patients? A systematic review of neuroimaging and treatment approaches
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a medical condition in which chronic pain is common and negatively impacts psychosocial function and quality of life. Although the brain mechanisms underlying chronic pain are well studied in other painful conditions, the brain mechanisms underlying chronic pain and the associated psychosocial comorbidities are not well established in SCD. A growing literature demonstrates the effect of treatment of chronic pain, including pharmacological and nonpharmacological treatments, on brain function. The present systematic review aimed to (1) determine the effects of chronic pain and psychosocial comorb...

Human Urinary Kallidinogenase Reduces Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Neuroinflammation and Oxidative Stress in BV-2 Cells.
Abstract Migraine is one of the most common neurological disorders which poses significant socioeconomic burden worldwide. Neuroinflammation and oxidative stress both play important roles in the pathogenesis of migraine. Human urinary kallidinogenase (UK) is a tissue kallikrein derived from human urine. Increasing evidence suggests that UK may protect against ischemic stroke, but UK's treatment potential against migraine remains to be explored. Immortal BV-2 murine microglial cells were treated with UK (125 nM, 250 nM, and 500 nM) and then given lipopolysaccharides (LPS, 1000 ng/mL). Cell viability of BV-2...

Complex neuropathic pain states
Publication date: Available online 6 September 2019Source: Anaesthesia & Intensive Care MedicineAuthor(s): Rhian P. Lewis, Indre KriukelyteAbstractIn this article we discuss complex neuropathic pain states: diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain (DPNP), phantom limb pain (PLP), central post-stroke pain (CPSP), and complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). Pain in these conditions can often be severe, significantly affect quality of life and be resistant to current treatment options. Multidisciplinary assessment and treatment is essential.
