Haemodynamic effects of exercise therapy in stable, optimally treated pulmonary arterial hypertension
Conclusions: Provisional results suggest exercise therapy in PAH has a positive effect on the pressure-flow relationship in the pulmonary circulation, leading to reduced stress on the right ventricle on exertion. This change may improve long term outcomes.

Right ventricular contractile reserve and pulmonary arterial compliance differentiate PAH patients with long-term survival and therapeutic success
Conclusions: RV contractile reserve and PA compliance differentiates long-term survivors (>10 years of treatment) from short-term survivors (<2 years of treatment) on PAH specific therapy.

Risk of gallstones in patients with obstructive sleep apnea: a nationwide observational cohort study
ConclusionThe study shows a strong association between OSA and gallstones. Moreover, our findings suggest the requirement for survey and health education for gallstones in OSA and further studies to verify whether the treatment of OSA can reduce the risk of gallstones.

Obstructive sleep apnea and specific cardiovascular outcomes
Conclusion: We have demonstrated a high prevalence OSA in respondents. We noted that arterial hypertension and cor hypertonicum were in correlation with the degree of OSA. History of myocardial infarction and stroke reach their peak in study group with AHI 15–30, although this conditions were much higher present in overall respondents with OSA compered to respondents without OSA. We have confirmed by increasing degree of OSA increases the percentage of specific cardiovascular outcomes.

Late Breaking Abstract - Balloon Pulmonary Angioplasty for the Treatment of Non Operable Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension - Initial experience of a Belgian Center
Conclusion: In our cohort, we demonstrated that BPA improves most of the haemodynamics variables, including stroke volume index and pulmonary arterial compliance, without severe adverse events. Further studies for the long term efficacy of BPA are required.

Self-reported snoring and incident cardiovascular disease events: results from the Jackson Heart Study
ConclusionIn conclusion, self-reported habitual snoring was not associated with incident CVD among this large African American cohort. Future studies providing objective data on snoring and sleep apnea may provide more information on the snoring-CVD association among African Americans.Trial registrationIdentification Number: NCT00005485

Genetic overlap of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cardiovascular disease-related traits: a large-scale genome-wide cross-trait analysis.
CONCLUSION: In a set of large-scale GWAS, we identify evidence of shared genetics between COPD and cardiac traits. PMID: 30940143 [PubMed - in process]

Vena cava backflow and right ventricular stiffness in pulmonary arterial hypertension
Vena cava backflow is a well-recognised clinical hallmark of right ventricular failure in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Backflow may result from tricuspid regurgitation during right ventricular systole or from impaired right ventricular diastolic filling during atrial contraction. Our aim was to quantify the forward and backward flow in the vena cava and to establish the main cause in PAH. In 62 PAH patients, cardiac magnetic resonance measurements provided volumetric flows (mL·s–1) in the superior and inferior vena cava; time integration of flow gave volume. The "backward fraction" was defined as the...

Cardio-Pulmonary Changes After Bronchoscopic Lung Volume Reduction with Endobronchial One-Way Valves
ConclusionBronchoscopic valve treatment seemed to have positive effects on cardio-pulmonary hemodynamics, and these changes were correlated with reductions of lobar volume.

30-day Readmissions After Acute Exacerbations of COPD: How Relevant Are Comorbidities?
Conclusions: Cardiovascular diseases were highly prevalent and acute heart failure was an important cause of 30-day readmission among AECOPD patients. GERD may complicate AECOPD recovery and patients with previous stroke may be at higher risk of a fatal outcome.

Accelerated FEV1 decline and risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality in a primary care population of COPD patients
Accelerated lung function decline has been associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in a general population, but little is known about this association in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We investigated the association between accelerated lung function decline and CVD outcomes and mortality in a primary care COPD population. COPD patients without a history of CVD were identified in the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD)-GOLD primary care dataset (n=36 382). Accelerated decline in forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) was defined using the fastest quartile of the COPD popula...

Bidirectional relationships of comorbidity with obstructive sleep apnoea
Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is frequently associated with comorbidities that include metabolic, cardiovascular, renal, pulmonary and neuropsychiatric. There is considerable evidence that OSA is an independent risk factor for many of these comorbidities but, more recently, there is evidence that some of these comorbidities may predispose to the development of OSA. Thus, there is growing evidence of a bidirectional relationship between OSA and comorbidity, especially for heart failure, metabolic syndrome and stroke. Potential mechanisms of bidirectional relationships differ in individual comorbidities with fluid retention...

The Right Ventricle in Pulmonary Hypertension
Semin Respir Crit Care Med DOI: 10.1055/s-0043-1770117The right ventricle plays a pivotal role in patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH). Its adaptation to pressure overload determines a patient's functional status as well as survival. In a healthy situation, the right ventricle is part of a low pressure, high compliance system. It is built to accommodate changes in preload, but not very well suited for dealing with pressure overload. In PH, right ventricular (RV) contractility must increase to maintain cardiac output. In other words, the balance between the degree of RV contractility and afterload determines stroke vol...
