Atherosclerosis as a Risk Factor for IBD: A Population-Based Case-Control Study
CONCLUSIONS: A history of an atherosclerotic-related condition is associated with increased odds of developing IBD, particularly among older adults. Future studies should investigate whether drugs targeting atherosclerotic-related inflammation may prevent IBD in higher-risk individuals.PMID:37721310 | DOI:10.14309/ajg.0000000000002502

Inflammatory Bowel Disease Linked With Increased Stroke Risk
(MedPage Today) -- Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) were 13% more likely to suffer a stroke than the general population, even decades after their diagnosis, according to a large national cohort study. The study included all biopsy...

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases in inflammatory bowel diseases: to the < em > heart < /em > of the issue
Front Cardiovasc Med. 2023 May 16;10:1143293. doi: 10.3389/fcvm.2023.1143293. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTAtherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and stroke are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Along to the traditional risk factors for these diseases, chronic inflammation is known to be an important player in accelerating the process of atherosclerosis, which can result in an increased incidence of arterial thromboembolic events. As in other chronic inflammatory diseases, in the past few years, several studies suggested that subjects affected by inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) may also be at an increm...

Inhibitors of the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway as promising therapeutic candidates for inflammatory diseases (Review)
Int J Mol Med. 2023 Apr;51(4):35. doi: 10.3892/ijmm.2023.5238. Epub 2023 Mar 24.ABSTRACTThe inflammasome regulates innate immunity by serving as a signaling platform. The Nod‑like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome, equipped with NLRP3, the adaptor protein apoptosis‑associated speck‑like protein (ASC) and pro‑caspase‑1, is by far the most extensively studied and well‑characterized inflammasome. A variety of stimuli can activate the NLRP3 inflammasome. When activated, the NLRP3 protein recruits the adaptor ASC protein and activates pro‑caspase‑1, resulting in inflammatory cytokine maturation and secreti...

Management and long-term outcomes of patients with chronic inflammatory diseases experiencing ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction: The SCALIM registry
CONCLUSIONS: Approximately 1 in 20 patients with STEMI has CID. We found no effect of CID on long-term survival. However, patients on corticosteroid therapy appeared to have higher rates of death during follow-up. Whether this finding is related to the use of corticosteroids or to the more progressive nature of their condition warrants further investigation.PMID:36372664 | DOI:10.1016/j.acvd.2022.09.003

Advancements of Prussian blue-based nanoplatforms in biomedical fields: Progress and perspectives
J Control Release. 2022 Oct 7:S0168-3659(22)00677-0. doi: 10.1016/j.jconrel.2022.10.007. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPrussian blue (PB) nanoparticles possess excellent physicochemical properties, including imaging features, robust photothermal conversion ability, catalytic activity, surface modifiability, effective drug loading, good stability, biocompatibility and biodegradability. With the advancement of nanotechnology, diverse PB-based nanoplatforms have been developed for biomedical applications. This review systematically summarized recent studies on PB-based nanoplatforms in the treatment of tumor (photothermal the...

Outcomes after acute coronary syndrome in patients with inflammatory bowel disease
ConclusionOur findings suggest that both residual MI risk and bleeding events should be carefully monitored in MI patients diagnosed with chronic inflammation such as that observed in IBD.

Genetically Predicted Frailty Index and Risk of Stroke and Alzheimer's Disease
CONCLUSIONS: The MR study suggested that genetically predicted FI may be associated with an increased risk of any stroke. Subgroup analysis indicated a suggestive association between genetically predicated FI and the risk of LAS. The underlying mechanisms need further warranted.PMID:35318774 | DOI:10.1111/ene.15332

A journey through clinic and research
I started to study Medicine at the University of Genoa, Italy more than 20 years ago and I now realize that I was quite far from understanding what ‘Medicine’ really means. After weeks and weeks spent on books during the first year, I understood that becoming a MD not only requires the willingness to help people with health problems, but also strong motivation and dedication to learn a huge amount of notions. In Italy, as it is the case for several other countries, the University courses last 6 years, during which the MD student is fully engaged by individual study, lessons and seminars, exercises, and internships. Wit...
