Immunogenetics of lithium response and psychiatric phenotypes in patients with bipolar disorder
Res Sq. 2023 Jun 26:rs.3.rs-3068352. doi: 10.21203/rs.3.rs-3068352/v1. Preprint.ABSTRACTThe link between bipolar disorder (BP) and immune dysfunction remains controversial. While epidemiological studies have long suggested an association, recent research has found only limited evidence of such a relationship. To clarify this, we investigated the contributions of immune-relevant genetic factors to the response to lithium (Li) treatment and the clinical presentation of BP. First, we assessed the association of a large collection of immune-related genes (4,925) with Li response, defined by the Retrospective Assessment of the ...

Impact of lithium on mortality among older adults with major psychiatric disorders: A 5-year prospective multicenter study
CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that lithium may not be associated with all-cause or disease-related mortality and might be associated with reduced risk of suicide in this population. They argue against the underuse of lithium as compared with antiepileptics and atypical antipsychotics among older adults with mood disorders.PMID:36905630 | DOI:10.1080/13607863.2023.2188172

Pharmacological Strategies for Bipolar Disorders in Acute Phases and Chronic management with a special focus on Lithium, Valproic Acid, and Atypical Antipsychotics
Curr Neuropharmacol. 2023 Feb 24. doi: 10.2174/1570159X21666230224102318. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBipolar disorders (BDs) are a heterogeneous group of severe affective disorders generally described by the alternation of (hypo)manic, depressive, and mixed phases, with euthymic intervals of variable duration. BDs are burdened with high psychiatric and physical comorbidity, increased suicide risk and reduced life expectancy. In addition, BDs can progress into complicated forms (e.g., mixed states, rapid/irregular cycling), which are more difficult to treat and often require personalized pharmacological combinations. Anti-suicide effect of lithium at infratherapeutic dose, a case report
Actas Esp Psiquiatr. 2022 Sep;50(5):241-245. Epub 2022 Sep 1.ABSTRACTAn anti-suicide effect has been well documented in prolonged lithium treatments, with high-quality evidence in bipolar disorder and unipolar depression, shown to be significantly superior to other mood stabilizers, with a 50-80% of reduction in suicide risk.PMID:36273384
