Inertial measurement unit compared to an optical motion capturing system in post-stroke individuals with foot-drop syndrome
Conclusions. IMU-based reconstruction algorithms were effective in measuring ankle dorsiflexion with small biases and good ICCs in adults with ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke presenting foot-drop. The precision obtained is sufficient to observe the fatigue influence on the dorsiflexion and therefore to use IMUs to adapt FES.

Depression Characterization and Race Among Stroke Survivors Receiving Inpatient Rehabilitation
Race and ethnicity play a significant role in poststroke outcomes. This brief report describes the presence of depression among stroke survivors who received inpatient rehabilitation and whether depression differs by race. Data from eRehabData and electronic medical records were analyzed for patients who received rehabilitation after an acute ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke. Of 1501 stroke patients, 61.3% were white, 33.9% were African American, and 4.8% were of other race/ethnic backgrounds. By retrospective clinical review, depression was documented for 29.7% of stroke patients. Premorbid versus new onset of poststroke de...

Phonemic fluency improved after inhibitory transcranial magnetic stimulation in a case of chronic aphasia
Twenty-six months after a left hemispheric ischemic stroke an aphasic patient showed a significant improvement in verbal fluency following ten daily sessions of inhibitory 1 Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation over the right cortex homologous to the Broca’s area. No improvement was observed for other linguistic functions or for executive ones. Results confirm the segregation of neural circuitries subtending phonemic and semantic fluency and suggest a selective usefulness of the repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation treatment.

The relationship between Home-time, quality of life and costs after ischemic stroke: the impact of the need for mobility aids, home and car modifications on Home-time.
CONCLUSIONS: Home-time is a stroke outcome associated with disease severity, healthcare costs and patient wellbeing. Streamlining the discharge process for those requiring extra material support may lead to cost savings and higher quality-of-life. Implications for rehabilitation Delays in discharge from the acute hospital or rehabilitation facility are incurred when patients need extra material support in order to return home. Staff from the discharging facility should assist families by giving timely information on the availability and the cost of wheel chairs and walkers; and explaining and planning the need of a stair l...
