Clustering and prediction of long-term functional recovery patterns in first-time stroke patients
ConclusionsThe longitudinal, multi-dimensional, functional assessment data of first-time stroke patients were successfully clustered, and the prediction models showed relatively good accuracies. Early identification and prediction of long-term functional outcomes will help clinicians develop customized treatment strategies.

New VOYAGER PAD Analysis Confirms Consistent Benefit of XARELTO ® (rivaroxaban) Plus Aspirin Following Lower Extremity Revascularization (LER)
TITUSVILLE, NJ, March 5, 2023 – The Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson today announced data from a new prespecified analysis from the Phase 3 VOYAGER PAD clinical trial reinforcing the benefits of the XARELTO® (rivaroxaban) vascular dose (2.5 mg twice daily plus aspirin 100 mg once daily) over standard of care (aspirin alone), demonstrating consistent benefit at 30 days, 90 days and up to three years following LER in patients with PAD. Lower extremity revascularization, also called peripheral revascularization, is a procedure that restores blood flow in blocked arteries or veins. This analysis of ...

Heterogeneity in diagnosis and prognosis of ischaemic stroke subtypes: 9-year follow-up of 22000 cases in Chinese adults
CONCLUSIONS: This study highlighted substantial heterogeneity in prognosis of IS subtypes and utility of ML approaches for classification of IS cases with incomplete clinical investigations.PMID:36847304 | DOI:10.1177/17474930231162265

MRI for all: Cheap portable scanners aim to revolutionize medical imaging
.news-article__hero--featured .parallax__element{ object-position: 47% 50%; -o-object-position: 47% 50%; } The patient, a man in his 70s with a shock of silver hair, lies in the neuro intensive care unit (neuro ICU) at Yale New Haven Hospital. Looking at him, you’d never know that a few days earlier a tumor was removed from his pituitary gland. The operation didn’t leave a mark because, as is standard, surgeons reached the tumor through his nose. He chats cheerfully with a pair of research associates who have come to check his progress with a new and potentially revolutionary device they are testing. The cylind...

Machine learning segmentation of core and penumbra from acute stroke CT perfusion data
We present an alternative model for the estimation of tissue fate using multiple perfusion measures simultaneously.MethodsWe used machine learning (ML) models based on four different algorithms, combining four CTP measures (cerebral blood flow, cerebral blood volume, mean transit time and delay time) plus 3D-neighborhood (patch) analysis to predict the acute ischemic core and perfusion lesion volumes. The model was developed using 86 patient images, and then tested further on 22 images.ResultsXGBoost was the highest-performing algorithm. With standard threshold-based core and penumbra measures as the reference, the model d...

Neuroimaging is the new “spatial omic”: multi-omic approaches to neuro-inflammation and immuno-thrombosis in acute ischemic stroke
AbstractIschemic stroke (IS) is the leading cause of acquired disability and the second leading cause of dementia and mortality. Current treatments for IS are primarily focused on revascularization of the occluded artery. However, only 10% of patients are eligible for revascularization and 50% of revascularized patients remain disabled at 3 months. Accumulating evidence highlight the prognostic significance of the neuro- and thrombo-inflammatory response after IS. However, several randomized trials of promising immunosuppressive or immunomodulatory drugs failed to show positive results. Insufficient understanding of inter-...

Predictive Accuracy of Stroke Risk Prediction Models Across Black and White Race, Sex, and Age Groups
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In this analysis of Black and White individuals without stroke or transient ischemic attack among 4 US cohorts, existing stroke-specific risk prediction models and novel machine learning techniques did not significantly improve discriminative accuracy for new-onset stroke compared with the pooled cohort equations, and the REGARDS self-report model had the best calibration. All algorithms exhibited worse discrimination in Black individuals than in White individuals, indicating the need to expand the pool of risk factors and improve modeling techniques to address observed racial disparities and imp...
