The Antidepressant Effects of GLP-1 Receptor Agonists: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Adults treated with GLP-1RAs showed significant reductions in the depression rating scale scores compared to those treated with control substances. Our findings suggest that GLP-1RAs may be a potential treatment for alleviating depressive symptoms in humans.PMID:37684186 | DOI:10.1016/j.jagp.2023.08.010

The perspectives of NETosis on the progression of obesity and obesity-related diseases: mechanisms and applications
Front Cell Dev Biol. 2023 Aug 15;11:1221361. doi: 10.3389/fcell.2023.1221361. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTObesity is a disease commonly associated with urbanization and can also be characterized as a systemic, chronic metabolic condition resulting from an imbalance between energy intake and expenditure. The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified obesity as the most serious chronic disease that is increasingly prevalent in the world population. If left untreated, it can lead to dangerous health issues such as hypertension, hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, hyperuricemia, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, atherosclerosis, and ...

A sweet emergency due to bitter poisoning-A case report
We present a case of a 22-year-old male patient, without previous history of diabetes, who was brought to the ER in an unresponsive state with an HbA1c of 5%. His initial laboratory investigations revealed hyperglycemia, high anion gap metabolic acidosis, ketonuria, and glycosuria. His relatives revealed intentional ingestion of OPC. He was treated for both OPC poisoning and hyperglycemic ketoacidosis. Adequate acute care was instigated though prognosis could not be gauged due to the early discharge of the patient against medical advice. This case highlights that OPC poisoning can be a possible etiological factor for hyper...

Use of hospital services by patients with chronic conditions in sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Among patients seeking hospital care in sub-Saharan Africa, multimorbidity remains poorly described despite high burdens of individual chronic diseases. Prospective public health studies of multimorbidity burden are needed to generate integrated and context-specific health system interventions that act to maximize patient survival and well-being.PMID:37638357 | PMC:PMC10452942 | DOI:10.2471/BLT.22.289597

Exposure to bisphenol A associated with multiple health-related outcomes in humans: An umbrella review of systematic reviews with meta-analyses
The objective of this study was to perform an umbrella review of published meta-analyses investigating the associations between BPA exposure and human-related health outcomes. The relevant reports were searched from three electronic databases from inception to July 12, 2023 including PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Embase. The reports that were systematic reviews with meta-analyses investigating the associations between BPA exposure and human health outcomes were included in our review. A total of 14 reports were included in our review. Several human health outcomes related to exposure BPA were investigated including maternal p...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, July 31st 2023
In conclusion, an SBP level below 130 mmHg was found to be associated with longevity among older women. The longer SBP was controlled at a level between 110 and 130 mmHg, the higher the survival probability to age 90. Preventing age-related rises in SBP and increasing the time with controlled BP levels constitute important measures for achieving longevity. « Back to Top

Curr Atheroscler Rep. 2023 Jul 20. doi: 10.1007/s11883-023-01130-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this review, we provide insight into and raise awareness of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the prevalence of acquired atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk factors in adolescents. We highlight data that could be used to guide the response to a future pandemic with the goal of reducing premature cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related morbidity and premature mortality.RECENT FINDINGS: During the global COVID-19 pandemic, many individuals, including youth, voluntarily or were mandated to ...
