Prevalence of renal dysfunction in ischaemic stroke and transient ischaemic attack patients with or without atrial fibrillation
ConclusionsRenal dysfunction is far more common in stroke patients than in the general population and more common in AF‐related stroke. These findings may have implications for the choice of anticoagulants.

Running 7 minutes a day 'halves heart death risk'
Conclusion This well-conducted cohort study found running is associated with a reduction in risk of death from any cause and death from cardiovascular disease during a 15-year follow-up. It calculated running was associated with a three-year increase in life expectancy. The study also found short duration running (less than 51 minutes a week, equivalent to less than approximately seven minutes a day) or running at slow speeds was associated with a reduction in risk. As this was a cohort study, it cannot show running caused the reduction in risk of death. It is possible there were other differences between runners and n...

Prevalence of Atrial Fibrillation in Patients with High CHADS2‐ and CHA2DS2VASc‐Scores: Anticoagulate or Monitor High‐Risk Patients?
ConclusionThe prevalence of AF increases with increasing CHADS2‐ and CHA2DS2VASc‐score. In intermediate scores intensified monitoring may be recommended. In high scores, thromboembolic complications occurred irrespective of the presence of AF and anticoagulant therapy may be initiated irrespective of documented AF.

Abstract 223: Patients With Cardiac Comorbidities Carry Worse Outcome as Identified by Our SELF Risk Stratification Pathway: An ACAP-SELF Syncope Dataset Analysis Session Title: Poster Session II
Conclusions: Using the SELF-pathway for patients presenting with syncope effectively identifies high risk patients who merit hospitalization and close follow-up post-discharge. These include patients with structural heart disease, abnormal EKG and abnormal telemetry, as well as patients with diabetes, CAD and CHF. This has important implications for the evaluation of a common disease that poses a significant economic burden on healthcare systems.

Painkiller use linked to irregular heartbeat
ConclusionThis prospective cohort study claims an association between NSAIDs usage and developing atrial fibrillation. However, there are many limitations to this research.Despite this being a large prospective cohort study that followed people over a period of time, the assessments within it were predominantly cross-sectional. That means it assessed the person’s current or recent prescription of NSAIDs at the time they were diagnosed, but this cannot prove that using NSAIDs caused atrial fibrillation. A better method may have been to assess the use of NSAIDs in people without atrial fibrillation at the start of the stud...

Uncomon Cause Stroke: Thalamic Stroke As Initial Presentation Of Dunnigan Familial Partial Lipodystrophy (FPLD) (P6.264)
We report a laminopathy case with no history of MS suffering strokeREPORT/CASEA Woman of 40 years old came to the stroke unit because of tingling in her right arm with acute onset. She suffers miscarriage twice. Her familial history reports a pseudocushingoid facies in a sister, a brother, some paternal uncles and her small daughter. She had no history of hypertension or diabetes.Neurological and general examination found pseudocushingoid facies, faciotroncular obesity, hirsutism, muscular hyperthrophy on upper body but amyotrophy of the lower part, proeminentes venous, a little adiposus tissue, acanthosis migrans on the n...

Prognosis of in-hospital myocardial infarction course for diabetic and nondiabetic patients using a noninvasive evaluation of hemodynamics and heart rate variability.
CONCLUSIONS. The patients with decreased HRV and low estimates of central hemodynamics evaluated by ICG are at an increased risk of the adverse in-hospital course of STEMI. The combined analysis of HRV and ICG hemodynamic estimates contributes to the risk assessment of the complicated in-hospital course of STEMI, in-hospital hemodynamically significant ventricular arrhythmia, and in-hospital death secondary to STEMI. The in-hospital prognostic value of the combined estimates of HRV and ICG is lower in the STEMI patients with diabetes mellitus as compared with the nondiabetic patients. Update on the management of atrial fibrillation.
Abstract Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common arrhythmia, with a prevalence that increases markedly with increasing age. Presence of AF has implications for management of future stroke risk. If the patient's pulse is irregular, an electrocardiogram should be ordered. Key management decisions are whether to adopt a rhythm control or a rate control strategy and whether to initiate anticoagulation. The primary aim of a rhythm control strategy is improved symptom control. AF ablation may be considered in younger patients (aged < 65 years) with paroxysmal or early persistent AF. AF increases the risk of stroke, an...

Shivering and tachycardic responses to external cooling in mice are substantially suppressed by TRPV1 activation but not by TRPM8 inhibition
In conclusion, external cooling-induced shivering and tachycardia are suppressed by TRPV1 activation, but not by TRPM8 inhibition. This suggests that TRPV1 agonists may be combined with external physical cooling to achieve more rapid and effective hypothermia.

Abstract 364: Maternal History of Hypertension and Incident Atrial Fibrillation According to Blood Pressure Category in a General Urban Population: The Suita Study Poster Session II
Conclusions: A maternal history of hypertension is a predictor of incident AF. For persons with a maternal history of hypertension, BP control would be under normal BP for AF prevention.

Brief Episodes of Silent Atrial Fibrillation Predict Clinical Vascular Brain Disease in Type 2 Diabetic Patients
This study evaluated whether subclinical episodes of atrial fibrillation (AF) were associated with an increased risk of silent cerebral infarct (SCI) and stroke in diabetic patients younger than 60 years who did not have other clinical evidence of AF and cerebrovascular disease at baseline.BackgroundIn type 2 diabetic patients, one-fourth of strokes are of unknown cause, and subclinical episodes of AF may be a common etiologic factor.MethodsA total of 464 type 2 diabetic patients younger than 60 years were included in a longitudinal observational study and matched to patients without diabetes. Patients underwent 48-h elect...

Electrocardiography series. Diabetes mellitus and heart disease.
Abstract Diabetes mellitus is responsible for diverse cardiovascular complications such as accelerated atherosclerosis, increased plaque burden and diffuse coronary lesions. It is also a major risk factor for myocardial infarction, stroke and peripheral vascular disease. Here, we present two cases. The first patient had subtle changes in the ECGs, with severe coronary artery disease requiring coronary artery bypass grafting, while the second had deep T wave inversion in the ECG and was found to have normal coronary arteries and nonischaemic cardiomyopathy. Although ECG failed to show the severity of the disease, i...
