Effect of Reduced Sympathetic Hyperactivity on Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Kidney Transplantation Patients
Abstract: Background: Hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system caused by chronic kidney disease has detrimental effects on hypertension and cardiovascular morbidity. Kidney transplantation does not ameliorate sympathetic nerve overactivity; however, bilateral nephrectomy eliminates it. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of bilateral nephrectomy on risk factors for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in long-term follow-up. Material and Methods: We studied 24 kidney recipients aged 44 ± 13 years who had undergone native bilateral nephrectomy. The control group included 17 recipients with preserve...

Incidence, risk factors, and outcomes of stroke post‐transplantation in patients receiving a steroid sparing immunosuppression protocol
This study has identified subgroups of patients who are at increased risk of CVA post‐transplant in patients otherwise receiving a steroid sparing immunosuppression protocol.

Cortical laminar necrosis due to refractory status epilepticus in a kidney transplant patient with cryptococcal meningitis
Publication date: Available online 17 November 2015 Source:Indian Journal of Transplantation Author(s): Zaheer Virani, Prashant Rajput, Pankaj Agarwal, Rashmi Badhe A 56-year-old diabetic male underwent kidney transplant in 2010. He was brought to the hospital with complaints of vomiting and altered sensorium of 10 days duration. Lumbar puncture revealed cryptococcal meningitis. He was promptly initiated on liposomal amphotericin B and flucytosine. Immunosuppressive agents tacrolimus and mycophenolate mofetil were discontinued. There was an initial improvement in his sensorium but a few days later, he developed super...

Donor risk factors in orthotopic liver transplant: analysis of the OPTN/UNOS registry.
This study of the United Network for Organ Sharing registry data analyzed reputed donor factors using the post-MELD data and evaluated them further in HCV positive and HCV negative recipients with hepatic cirrhosis to develop a modified DRI (mDRI). We found that HCV negative cirrhotic recipients have generally higher tolerance against inferior qualities of donors than HCV positive cirrhotic patients. In addition, the results revealed the post-MELD prognostic factors that should be considered in the donor procurement processes. The group of "all recipients" and the subset of HCV positive cirrhotic recipients showed a simila...

Frequency of Cardiovascular Events and Effect on Survival in Liver Transplant Recipients for Cirrhosis Due to Alcoholic or Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis.
CONCLUSIONS: Cardiovascular events occurred with similar frequency in transplant recipients for nonalcoholic steatohepatitis or alcoholic cirrhosis. Patient survival was affected in both groups, but male patients with concomitant hepatitis C virus infection remained at higher risk for a cardiovascular event after liver transplant. Development of a cardiac evaluation protocol for liver transplant recipients could help monitor these patients. PMID: 26581602 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Concomitant Mitochondrial Diabetes and Myopathy Mistook for Complications of Immunosuppressants After Kidney Transplant
We report the case of a 48-year-old woman with diabetes mellitus, sensorineural hearing loss, and severe myopathy without neuropathy after deceased donor kidney transplant. ShehadamitochondrialDNApointmutation at position 3243 (A>G), and mitochondrial diseases such as maternally inherited diabetes deafness or mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodeswere suspected.Diabetes andother symptoms following kidney transplant can often be overlooked as complications of immunosuppressants taken after kidney transplant. However, in patients without a known cause of their symptoms, appropriate exam...
