Associations of fat and muscle tissue with cognitive status in older adults: the AGES-Reykjavik Study
Conclusion</div>a higher amount of abdominal and thigh subcutaneous fat were associated with a lower likelihood of dementia in women only, while more thigh muscle was associated with a lower likelihood of dementia in men and women.</span>

The association of a heart attack or stroke with depressive symptoms stratified by the presence of a close social contact: findings from the National Health and Aging Trends Study Cohort
ConclusionsOlder adults have increased odds of having depressive symptoms following a self‐reported stroke, but only those with no close social contacts had increased odds of depressive symptoms following a heart attack. Social networks may play a role in the mechanisms underlying depression among older adults experiencing certain acute health events. Future work exploring the potential causal relationships suggested here, if confirmed, could inform interventions to alleviate or prevent depression among at risk older adults. Physical activity and exercise as countermeasures to physical frailty and sarcopenia.
Abstract The identification of cost-effective interventions that improve the health status and prevent disability in old age is one of the most important public health challenges. Regular physical activity is the only intervention that has consistently been shown to improve functional health and energy balance and to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, several cancers, depression and falls. In advanced age, physical activity is also effective at mitigating sarcopenia, restoring robustness, and preventing/delaying the development of disability. On the other hand, physical inactivity is reco...

Dementia and co ‐occurring chronic conditions: a systematic literature review to identify what is known and where are the gaps in the evidence?
ConclusionsThis review summarizes that living with significant cognitive impairment or dementia negatively impacts mortality, institutionalization, and functional outcomes for people living with multiple chronic conditions. Our findings suggest that chronic‐disease management interventions will need to address co‐occurring cognitive impairment. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Depression and Cerebrovascular Disease: What is to be Done?
A body of literature links depression with vascular diseases.1 Depressed individuals have 45% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.29 –1.63) higher risk for stroke than nondepressed individuals and 25% (95% CI: 1.11–1.40) higher risk for stroke-related mortality.2 In this volume, Zahodne et al.3 confirm the association between depressive symptoms and risk of stroke. Two measures of depressive symptoms were found to increase t he risk of stroke: the average level of depressive symptom severity across several visits and fluctuation of depressive symptoms across visits.

Depression and Cerebrovascular Disease. What is to be Done?
A body of literature links depression with vascular diseases (1). Depressed individuals have 45% (95% CI, 1.29-1.63) higher risk for stroke than non-depressed individuals and 25% (95% CI, 1.11-1.40) higher risk for stroke related mortality (2). The paper by Zahodne et  al in this volume confirms the association between depressive symptoms and risk of stroke. Two measures of depressive symptoms were found to increase the risk of stroke, the average level of depressive symptom severity across several visits and fluctuation of depressive symptoms across visits.

Memory performance on the story recall test and prediction of cognitive dysfunction progression in mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's dementia
ConclusionsThe present study suggests that the SRT delayed recall score independently predicts progression to dementia in patients with MCI. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2016; ••: ••–••.

Cerebral Amyloid Deposition Is Associated with Gait Parameters in the Mayo Clinic Study of Aging
ConclusionPiB‐PET SUVR across ROIs, independent of general measures of AD‐associated neurodegeneration, is associated with poorer performance on multiple gait parameters among cognitively normal women, aged 50 to 69 years. Longitudinal studies are needed to determine whether Aβ predicts gait decline in both women and men.

Comparing Variability, Severity, and Persistence of Depressive Symptoms as Predictors of Future Stroke Risk.
CONCLUSIONS: Capturing the dynamic nature of depression is relevant in assessing stroke risk. Fluctuating depressive symptoms may reflect a prodrome of reduced cerebrovascular integrity. PMID: 27866734 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

C-reactive protein is associated with disability independently of vascular events: the Northern Manhattan Study
Conclusions</div>in this large population-based study, higher serum CRP levels were associated with higher baseline disability, even when adjusting for baseline covariates and stroke and MI occurring during follow-up. Systemic inflammation may contribute to disability independently of clinical vascular events.</span>

Association Between Carbohydrate Nutrition and Successful Aging Over 10 Years
Conclusions: Consumption of dietary fiber from breads/cereals and fruits independently influenced the likelihood of aging successfully over 10 years. These findings suggest that increasing intake of fiber-rich foods could be a successful strategy in reaching old age disease free and fully functional.

Risk factors for low back pain and sciatica in elderly men—the MrOS Sweden study
Conclusions</div>in older men with LBP and SCI, anatomical abnormalities such as vertebral fractures, metastases, central or lateral spinal stenosis or degenerative conditions may only in part explain prevalent symptoms and disability. Social and lifestyle factors must also be evaluated since they are associated not only with unspecific LBP but also with LBP with SCI.</span>

Influence of cerebral white matter hyperintensities on cognitive impairment in elderly medical patients
ConclusionsAlthough cognitive impairment in elderly medical patients is associated with stroke and brain atrophy, white matter hyperintensities, especially BGH and infratentorial region, are associated with cognitive decline in relation to CKD. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2016; ••: ••–••.
