Genetic Study of White Matter Integrity in UK Biobank (N=8448) and the Overlap With Stroke, Depression, and Dementia Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—Genetic variants within the VCAN gene may play a role in the mechanisms underlying microstructural integrity of the white matter in the brain measured as FA and MD. Mechanisms underlying white matter alterations are shared with cerebrovascular disease, and inherited differences in white matter microstructure impact on Alzheimer disease and major depressive disorder.

First Year After Stroke Clinical Sciences
This study was a randomized controlled trial that addressed ways to enhance participation in patient-valued activities and intermittently screen for adverse sequelae postdischarge from rehabilitation. Collaborative goal setting was undertaken in both groups at discharge from inpatient rehabilitation. The control group received standard management as determined by the treating team. In addition, the intervention group received a multimodal approach, including telephone contacts, screening for adverse sequelae, written information, home visits, review of goal achievement, and further referral to relevant health services. The...

Wants Talk Psychotherapy but Cannot Talk: EMDR for Post-stroke Depression with Expressive Aphasia
CONCLUSION This is the first reported case demonstrating that EMDR can be effective for depression, even in those with severe expressive aphasia. In our case, there was no reluctance to disclose information, simply a neurological inability to do so. Through preparation, patience, perseverance, and plasticity (clinician flexibility, though perhaps also neuroplasticity), the patient’s PSD gradually improved, and she was able to reinvent her life within her limitations. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The authors gratefully acknowledge Eugene Schwartz, E.C. Hurley, and Mark Hubner for providing consultation during patient care. REFERENCES ...

Return to work and depressive symptoms in young stroke survivors after six and twelve months: cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses
This study examined if RTW is linked to PSD within the first year after ischemic stroke, independently from established risk factors.METHOD: Stroke survivors (n = 176) in their working age (<65 years) recruited from two rehabilitation clinics were assessed for established risk factors: pre-stroke depression, activities of daily living, stroke severity, cognitive impairment, and social support. RTW and depressive symptoms (Geriatric Depression Scale: GDS-15) were assessed six- and twelve-months post-stroke. Multivariate regression analyses were used to assess the cross-sectional and longitudinal relationship between RTW ...

Impact of rehabilitation adherence and depressive symptoms on post-stroke self-care ability and quality of life: a longitudinal study
CONCLUSION: Both depressive symptoms and rehabilitation adherence behavior impacted the rehabilitation effect among patients who are recovering from a stroke.PMID:37722691 | DOI:10.1080/10749357.2023.2259652

Part II: predictors of depression after stroke and impact of depression on stroke outcome: an updated systematic review of observational studies
ConclusionsEarly identification of patients at high risk of depression after stroke, those with a history of depression and physical disability after stroke, would enable the early implementation of effective management and prevention strategies for depression. The reciprocal relationship between depression and physical disability highlights the need for interventions that reduce disability after stroke, which may in turn improve mood and overall recovery for an increasingly large number of stroke survivors.

African American Stroke Survivors: More Caregiving Time, but Less Caregiving Burden Original Article
Conclusions— Black stroke survivors received an average of 11 more hours of care than white stroke survivors without substantial differences in unmet need. Despite providing more hours of care, caregivers of black stroke were more positive about their caregiver role than caregivers of white stroke survivors.

Feasibility of Integrating Post Stroke Rehabilitation and Recovery Assessments in Stroke Clinic (P5.295)
Conclusions:Significant post stroke fatigue, depression and rehabilitative challenges are prevalent, even in patients with mild stroke. Utilizing a structured assessment tool with dedicated personnel is a feasible and sensitive method in evaluating post stroke patients and guiding management, particularly those with mild disability.Disclosure: Dr. Taboada has nothing to disclose. ICARUSS, the Integrated Care for the Reduction of Secondary Stroke trial: rationale and design of a randomized controlled trial of a multimodal intervention to prevent recurrent stroke in patients with a recent cerebrovascular event, ACTRN = 12611000264987
ConclusionThe ICARUSS study aims to recruit and follow up patients between 2007 and 2013 and demonstrate the effectiveness of exposure to the ICARUSS model in stroke survivors to reduce recurrent stroke or vascular events and promote the implementation of best practice risk factor management at primary care level.
