Chronic stroke survivors achieve comparable outcomes following virtual task specific repetitive training guided by a wearable robotic orthosis (UL-EXO7) and actual task specific repetitive training guided by a physical therapist
Abstract: Survivors post stroke commonly have upper limb impairments. Patients can drive neural reorganization, brain recovery and return of function with task specific repetitive training (TSRT). Fifteen community independent stroke survivors (25–75 years,>6 months post stroke, Upper Limb Fugl Meyer [ULFM] scores 16–39) participated in this randomized feasibility study to compare outcomes of upper limb TSRT guided by a robotic orthosis (bilateral or unilateral) or a physical therapist. After 6 weeks of training (18 h), across all subjects, there were significant improvements in depression, flexibility, strength, t...

Cost analysis of the Communication and Low Mood (CALM) randomised trial of behavioural therapy for stroke patients with aphasia.
CONCLUSION: Overall the behavioural therapy was found to improve mood and resulted in some encouraging savings in resource utilisation over the six months follow-up. PMID: 24942481 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Robotic neurorehabilitation in patients with chronic stroke: psychological well-being beyond motor improvement
Although gait abnormality is one of the most disabling events following stroke, cognitive, and psychological impairments can be devastating. The Lokomat is a robotic that has been used widely for gait rehabilitation in several movement disorders, especially in the acute and subacute phases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of gait robotic rehabilitation in patients affected by chronic stroke. Psychological impact was also taken into consideration. Thirty patients (13 women and 17 men) affected by chronic stroke entered the study. All participants underwent neurological examination with respect to amb...

Psychometric evaluation of the Signs of Depression Scale with a revised scoring mechanism in stroke patients with communicative impairment.
CONCLUSION: The diagnostic value of the SODS did not improve using a Likert scale format. However, the diagnostic value of the original dichotomous SODS is reasonable for the initial mood assessment of stroke patients with communicative impairment. PMID: 28511591 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Executive functioning and daily living of individuals with chronic stroke: measurement and implications
The objectives of this study were (a) to characterize the EF and independence in daily living of community-dwelling individuals with chronic stroke by using pen-and-paper and performance-based EF assessments, (b) to explore correlations between scores detected by different EF assessments and (c) to assess the correlations between EF and independence in basic activities of daily living (BADL) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL). This cross-sectional study included 50 (30 men and 20 women) community-dwelling individuals [mean (SD) age 59.8 (9.3)] with chronic stroke. Participants were overall independent in ba...

Music as a Therapy to Alleviate Anxiety During Inpatient Rehabilitation for Stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: These findings demonstrate that music intervention may help lessen anxiety in rehabilitation patients poststroke. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Offering musical intervention to stroke patients in rehabilitation may lessen symptoms of anxiety. PMID: 30601431 [PubMed - in process]

Thermotherapy Combined With Therapeutic Exercise Improves Muscle Strength and Depression in Patients With Ischemic Stroke.
CONCLUSION: The intervention increased muscle strength and decreased depression during the first 3 months after stroke onset. The significant effects were found beginning during the third week of the intervention. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This intervention is inexpensive and can be easily applied by caregivers at home. Validity and reliability of the Chinese version of the Daily Living Self-Efficacy Scale among stroke patients
The aim of this study was to examine the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the Daily Living Self-Efficacy Scale (DLSES) in stroke patients. In total, 172 participants were recruited from a local hospital in China. The internal consistent reliability and convergent validity of the total scale and activities of daily living (ADL) and psychosocial functioning subscales were examined and factor analysis was carried out. Cronbach’s αs for the Chinese version of the DLSES, ADL subscale, and psychosocial subscale were 0.96, 0.90, and 0.95, respectively. In the factor analysis, two factors (ADL and psychosocial...

Depression one year after hemorrhagic stroke is associated with late worsening of  outcomes.
CONCLUSION: This is the first study to investigate depression one year after ICH. Post-ICH depression was common and associated with late worsening of disability unrelated to initial hemorrhage severity. Further research is needed to understand whether depression is caused by worsened disability, or whether the converse is true. PMID: 28505996 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Family caregiver adjustment and stroke survivor impairment: A path analytic model.
Objective: Depressive symptoms are a common problem among family caregivers of stroke survivors. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between care recipient ’s impairment and caregiver depression, and determine the possible mediating effects of caregiver negative problem-orientation, mastery, and leisure time satisfaction. The evaluated model was derived from Pearlin’s stress process model of caregiver adjustment. Method: We analyzed baseline data f rom 122 strained family members who were assisting stroke survivors in Germany for a minimum of 6 months and who consented to participate in a randomize...

Relation of depressive symptoms to outcome of CI movement therapy after stroke.
Conclusion: These results suggest that depressive symptoms do not significantly limit motor recovery in patients treated with CIMT for chronic poststroke hemiparesis. Additionally, treatment with CIMT may improve depressive symptoms. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2017 APA, all rights reserved)
