Simulation training in suicide risk assessment and intervention: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: The heterogeneity of methodological designs, interventions, and trained populations combined with a limited number of RCTs and studies on patients' outcomes limit the strength of the evidence. However, preliminary findings suggest that simulation is promising for practical training in suicidal crisis intervention and should be further studied.PMID:37073473 | PMC:PMC10120456 | DOI:10.1080/10872981.2023.2199469

Anxiety in first year medical students taking gross anatomy
To study anxiety levels in first‐year medical students taking gross anatomy. Thirty medical students per year, for 2 years, completed the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) 10 times during a 13‐week gross anatomy course. In addition, behavioral observations were made by a psychiatrist during gross anatomy for demonstrations of assertive, destructive, neutral, or passive behavior. Additional qualitative outcome measures were group exit interviews with the faculty and students. The mean BAI for all 60 students per year, for 2 years, was 2.19 ± 3.76, 93% of the scores indicated minimal anxiety, and 89% of BAI values were l...

Trends in medical students' stress, physical, and emotional health throughout training.
Conclusions: In a competency-based curriculum, physical, emotional and overall health significantly worsened during Year 1 but improved thereafter, while perceived stress remained unchanged. Early in training, stress and poor overall health may be related to concerns about self-efficacy and workload. Although advanced students show improved wellness, concerns remained about emotional difficulties, such as anxiety and irritability, and feeling a lack of control. Predictors of personal depression stigma in medical students in China: differences in male and female groups
Med Educ Online. 2022 Dec;27(1):2093427. doi: 10.1080/10872981.2022.2093427.ABSTRACTDepression is common worldwide, and stigmatizing attitudes toward depression have proved to be one of the major barriers to seeking professional help. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the level of personal depression stigma and identify its predictive factors among medical students in Hainan, China, as well as explore the gender difference. A total of 2,186 medical students were recruited using stratified random cluster sampling and interviewed by structured anonymous questionnaires. Personal stigma was measured by the standardized...

Can the 12-item general health questionnaire be used to identify medical students who might `struggle¿ on the medical course? A prospective study on two cohorts
Conclusions: Results from two cohorts provide insufficient evidence to recommend the routine use of the GHQ-12 as a screening tool. The timing of administration could have a critical influence on the results, and the theoretical and practical implications of this finding are discussed. Low marks in semester 1 examinations seem be the best single indicator of students at risk for subsequent poor performance.

Euthanasia is not medical treatment
Introduction or background The public assumes that if euthanasia and assisted suicide were to be legalized they would be carried out by physicians. Sources of data In furthering critical analysis, we supplement the discourse in the ethics and palliative care literature with that from medical education and evolving jurisprudence. Areas of agreement Both proponents and opponents agree that the values of respect for human life and for individuals' autonomy are relevant to the debate. Areas of controversy Advocates of euthanasia and assisted suicide give priority to the right to personal autonomy and avoid discussions of ha...

Student centered curricular elements are associated with a healthier educational environment and lower depressive symptoms in medical students
The objectives of the current study are to (i) compare the EE perceptions of medical students studying in a System Based Curriculum (SBC) with those studying in a traditional curriculum (ii) compare the rate of depressive symptoms among the same students studying in both types of curricula (iii) determine whether there is a difference in the EE perception and depressive symptoms based on gender and year of study. `Simulation-based learning in psychiatry for undergraduates at the University of Zimbabwe medical school¿
Conclusions: In Zimbabwe, simulation teaching was acceptable and could be adapted with minimal effort by local psychiatrists and implemented by post-graduate trainees and one consultant, Students found it helpful and enjoyable and their confidence increased after the teaching. It offers students a broader exposure to psychiatric conditions than they receive during clinical attachment to the inpatient wards. Involving psychiatry trainees and nursing staff may be a sustainable approach in a setting with small number of consultants and limited funds to pay for professional actors.

Survey of Physician Well-Being and Health Behaviors at an Academic Medical Center.
CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of recent depressive symptoms among responding physicians was nearly 30%. Interventions to engage physicians in primary care relationships and social support to confidentially disclose potentially stigmatizing characteristics may facilitate earlier case finding of those at risk for depression, suicide, and substance abuse.
