Antioxidant action of xanthine oxidase inhibitor febuxostat protects the liver and blood vasculature in SHRSP5/Dmcr rats
CONCLUSIONS: Overall, the XO inhibitor febuxostat exerted protective effects against NASH and atherosclerosis in SHRSP5/Dmcr rats.PMID:37376883 | DOI:10.32725/jab.2023.009

Air Pollution: Another Threat to HDL Function
Int J Mol Sci. 2022 Dec 24;24(1):317. doi: 10.3390/ijms24010317.ABSTRACTEpidemiological studies have consistently demonstrated a positive association between exposure to air pollutants and the incidence of cardiovascular disease, with the strongest evidence for particles with a diameter < 2.5 μm (PM2.5). Therefore, air pollution has been included among the modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular outcomes as cardiovascular mortality, acute coronary syndrome, stroke, heart failure, and arrhythmias. Interestingly, the adverse effects of air pollution are more pronounced at higher levels of exposure but were also sho...

Platelet Redox Imbalance in Hypercholesterolemia: A Big Problem for a Small Cell
Int J Mol Sci. 2022 Sep 28;23(19):11446. doi: 10.3390/ijms231911446.ABSTRACTThe imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) synthesis and their scavenging by anti-oxidant defences is the common soil of many disorders, including hypercholesterolemia. Platelets, the smallest blood cells, are deeply involved in the pathophysiology of occlusive arterial thrombi associated with myocardial infarction and stroke. A great deal of evidence shows that both increased intraplatelet ROS synthesis and impaired ROS neutralization are implicated in the thrombotic process. Hypercholesterolemia is recognized as cause of atherosclerosis,...

Hawthorn fruit acid consumption attenuates hyperlipidemia-associated oxidative damage in rats
CONCLUSION: HFA administration can provide health benefits by counteracting the effects of hyperlipidemia caused by an HFD in the body, and the underlying mechanism of this event is closely related to the activation of the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway.PMID:35990322 | PMC:PMC9384962 | DOI:10.3389/fnut.2022.936229

Probucol Trial for Secondary Prevention of Atherosclerotic Events in Patients with Coronary Heart Disease (PROSPECTIVE).
CONCLUSION: Since there was no statistical significance between the probucol and control groups despite a marked reduction of HDL-C, further studies on the clinical outcomes of probucol on top of conventional therapy may be necessary in the future (UMIN000003307). Icosapent Ethyl: drug profile and evidence of reduced residual cardiovascular risk in patients with statin-managed LDL-C cholesterol.
Authors: Bazarbashi N, Miller M Abstract INTRODUCTION: Icosapent Ethyl (IPE) is a highly purified (>96%) form of eicosapentanoic acid, a marine-derived omega-3 fatty acid known to reduce serum triglyceride levels. Experimental and human studies also support anti-atherosclerotic properties of IPE including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, endothelial and plaque stabilizing effects. In the Reduction of Cardiovascular Events with Icosapent Ethyl-Intervention Trial (REDUCE-IT)l),the addition of 4 grams IPE daily resulted in a 25% reduction in cardiovascular events beyond statins and other standard of care therapies. ...
