Conformal Medical launches LAA seal study
Conformal Medical said yesterday that it launched an investigational device exemption trial for a device designed to seal off the heart’s left atrial appendage to help prevent stroke in atrial fibrillation patients. Nashua, N.H.-based Conformal’s device is designed to adapt to the each patient’s individual physiology, to be easier to implant with less imaging and without general anesthesia. The 45-patient, single-arm study is designed to evaluate the device’s performance, with an estimated primary completion date of April 2020 and a final completion date of June 2025, according to ClinicalTrials.gov. Evaluation of the use of low-molecular-weight heparin for venous thromboembolism prophylaxis in medical patients.
CONCLUSIONS: Overall adherence to published guidelines for VTE prophylaxis has improved compared with other published reviews on the topic, but documentation of patients' VTE risk in files is poor. Overuse in low-risk patients may be an unintended consequence of the widespread advocacy of LMWH use in hospital, highlighting the importance of adequate VTE risk stratification. Incorrect dosing in special population groups is an issue that needs to be addressed, as is non-utilisation of mechanical prophylaxis methods. PMID: 32657702 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Real-world burden of chemotherapy-induced myelosuppression in patients with small cell lung cancer: a retrospective analysis of electronic medical data from community cancer care providers
Conclusions Chemotherapy-induced myelosuppression places a substantial real-world burden on patients with SCLC in the community cancer care setting. Innovations to protect bone marrow from chemotherapy-induced damage have the potential to reduce this burden.Plain language summary This study looked at the medical records of people with a particular type of lung cancer known as small cell lung cancer. When treated with chemotherapy, people with this cancer may develop a condition called myelosuppression. This causes people to have fewer blood cells, which can lead to tiredness, or increase the risk of infection or bleeding. ...

Prevalence, causes, medical interventions, and mortality outcome of acute gastrointestinal bleeding among COVID-19 inpatients
CONCLUSIONS: Age, male sex, chronic liver disease, and chronic kidney disease are risk factors for AGIB among COVID-19 inpatients. Peptic ulcer disease is the most common cause. COVID-19 inpatients with AGIB have a higher risk of mortality, but a large percentage of deaths are not bleeding-related.PMID:37026739 | DOI:10.1080/03007995.2023.2201097

Potential New Medical Superglue Inspired By Mussels
Mussels can be a mouthwatering meal, but the chemistry that lets mussels stick to underwater surfaces may also provide a highly adhesive wound closure and more effective healing from surgery. In recent decades bioahesives, tissue sealants and hemostatic agents became the favored products to control bleeding and promote tissue healing after surgery. However, many of them have side effects or other problems, including an inability to perform well on wet tissue. "To solve this medical problem, we looked at nature," said Jian Yang, associate professor of bioengineering at Penn State...
