Epidemiology of Liver Cancer in Latin America: Current and Future Trends
Semin Liver Dis DOI: 10.1055/s-0039-3399561Over 38,000 cases of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are estimated to occur in Latin America annually. The region is characterized by sociocultural heterogeneity and economic disparities, which impose barriers in addressing this major health issue. A significant proportion of patients are still diagnosed in the later stages of the disease, although efforts to implement effective screening programs have been reported by referral centers. While viral hepatitis remains the predominant etiology of liver disease among HCC cases in Latin America, a high prevalence of fatty liver disease ...

Liver Diseases in South Korea: A Pulse Check of the Public's Knowledge, Awareness, and Behaviors
CONCLUSION: The public's knowledge towards liver-related diseases in Korea was found to be lacking, which could account for a lower sense of urgency towards screening and treatment. More efforts are needed to address misperceptions and dispel stigma in an effort to encourage pro-health seeking behaviors.PMID:36444544 | PMC:PMC9760893 | DOI:10.3349/ymj.2022.0332

Changes in Characteristics of Patients with Liver Cirrhosis Visiting a Tertiary Hospital over 15 Years: a Retrospective Multi-Center Study in Korea.
CONCLUSION: In recent years, the overall number of cirrhosis patients has decreased. This study confirmed the recent trend in decrease of cirrhosis, especially of cirrhosis due to HBV, and the increase of HCV, alcoholic and NAFLD cirrhosis. Targeted screening for at-risk patients will facilitate early detection of liver diseases allowing effective intervention and may have decreased the development of cirrhosis and its complications. Clinical impact and mechanisms in hepatitis B virus infection concurrent with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
This study increases the understanding of the relationship and mechanisms of interaction between steatosis and hepatitis B virus infection, and it provides new strategies for the future clinical management and treatment of CHB combined with NAFLD.PMID:35940901 | DOI:10.1097/CM9.0000000000002310

'Friendly' virus repairs damaged liver cells (but only in mice)
Conclusion This study showed it was possible to engineer and inject instructions that transform myofibroblasts into liver cells in mice with liver disease, which is quite a feat. Not all delivery mechanisms, called vectors, worked, but in those that did, the new liver cells looked normal, replaced some of the dying cells, and led to less damage due to collagen build up. Despite the alcoholism-related headline, the mice did not have alcohol-induced liver damage – although this is a major cause of liver damage in people. This study serves to prove this approach is feasible, and was successful in doing this. Researchers wi...

Ultrasound Evaluation of Liver Fibrosis
Publication date: Available online 7 June 2017 Source:Journal of Medical Ultrasound Author(s): Yang-Sheng Lin Early diagnosis of liver fibrosis is an important factor affecting the efficacy of chronic hepatitis treatment. In the past, the diagnosis of liver fibrosis was dependent on a liver biopsy which has several shortcomings as sampling error, intra- or inter-observation variations and possible procedure-related complications. Ultrasound-based elastography, tissue elastography (TE) and acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) have been developed to assess liver fibrosis. Current clinical evidence indicates that TE and A...

Elevated body mass index is a risk factor associated with possible liver cirrhosis across different etiologies of chronic liver  disease
Conclusion Elevated BMI was an independent risk factor associated with possible LC across the three different etiologies of CLD. As such, weight loss may be beneficial in these patients.
