Initial Cancer Treatment in Certified Versus Non-Certified Hospitals: Results of the WiZen Comparative Cohort Study
CONCLUSION: The WiZen study shows for the entities studied that initial cancer treatment in a certified center is associated with lower mortality. Despite the recommendations of the National Cancer Plan, however, more than 40% of all cancer patients still receive their initial treatment in a non-certified hospital. The preferential provision of initial care in certified hospitals would be likely to improve overall survival. Although the study design does not permit any conclusion with regard to causality, the findings seem robust considering that a control group was used, confounders were taken into account, and the study ...

Sex and Tumor-Site Differences in the Association of Alcohol Intake With the Risk of Early-Onset Colorectal Cancer
CONCLUSION: Excessive alcohol consumption increases the risk of CRC onset before age 50 years. Thus, effective interventions are required to discourage alcohol consumption among young people and to tailor CRC screening approaches for high-risk individuals.PMID:37315287 | DOI:10.1200/JCO.22.01895

Impact of Volumetric Dosimetry on the Projected Cost of Radiation-Related Late Effects Screening After Childhood Cancer: A Real-World Cohort Analysis
CONCLUSION: Use of VD to enhance precision of guideline-based screening for radiation-related late effects permits fewer recommended screening tests and generates cost-savings.PMID:37284853 | DOI:10.1093/oncolo/oyad136

Investigating Mortality Disparities Among Insured Patients With Colon Cancer Treated in an Integrated Health care System and Other Private Settings
DISCUSSION: Lower SES was associated with higher mortality risk within the OI group; however, within KPSC no such association was observed. Care coordination in IHS settings mitigate SES-related mortality differences.PMID:37265450 | DOI:10.1177/00031348221146950

Factors Associated with Receipt of Adjuvant Chemotherapy in Stage II Colon Cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Factors associated with not receiving chemotherapy in high-risk stage II colon cancers included increasing age, medical comorbidities, increasing distance from the treatment facility, and lack of insurance. Chemotherapy is associated with improved overall survival in high-risk patients.PMID:37249722 | DOI:10.1245/s10434-023-13631-z

Food Deserts Increase Readmission After Esophagectomy for Cancer: A Multi-Institutional Study
CONCLUSIONS: FD residence was associated with 30-day readmission after esophagectomy in patients undergoing tri-modality treatment for esophageal cancer in this multi-institutional population. Identification of patients residing in a FD may allow surgeons to focus preventative interventions during treatment and post-operatively to improve outcomes.PMID:37080374 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2023.04.015

Association of Rural Residence and Receipt of Guideline-Concordant Care for Locoregional Colon Cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Rural and urban patients with locoregional CC are equally likely to receive GCC, suggesting that differences in cancer care delivery may not explain rural-urban disparities.PMID:36933082 | DOI:10.1245/s10434-023-13340-7

Medicare Advantage: A Disadvantage for Complex Cancer Surgery Patients
CONCLUSION: Enrollment in MA plan is associated with lower estimated hospital costs. However, compared with TM, MA beneficiaries had lower access to high-volume hospitals and increased 30-day mortality for stomach, pancreas, or liver surgery.PMID:36356283 | DOI:10.1200/JCO.21.01359

Survival Analysis in Patients with Lung Cancer and Subsequent Primary Cancer: A Nationwide Cancer Registry Study
CONCLUSIONS: Survival in patients with MPMs depends on baseline characteristics and treatments. Our findings may contribute to the development of precision medicine for improving personalized treatment and survival as well as the reduction of medical costs.PMID:36233811 | DOI:10.3390/jcm11195944
