The application of p2PSA% and prostate health index in prostate cancer detection: A prospective cohort in a Tertiary Medical Center
Conclusion%p2PSA and PHI increased the diagnostic accuracy with significantly greater sensitivity and specificity than tPSA. We determined an optimal cut-off value of PHI among Taiwanese population. These findings support the usefulness in the decisional process of prostate biopsy.

Alpha Tau Medical raises $29m
Alpha Tau Medical said today it raised $29 million in a private funding round to help support its alpha radiation cancer therapy technology. The round was led by Israeli private equity firm Shavit Capital and joined by global equity crowdfunding platform OurCrowd.com and Medison Pharma venture capital arm Medison Ventures, the Israel-based company said. The round was also joined by Apax Partner founds Ronald Cohen and Alan Patricof, Alpha Tau said. “We are confident that Alpha Tau’s ground-breaking technology can be a game changer in the treatment of cancer. Importantly, under the guidance of an experienced m...

Clinical outcomes associated with pathogenic genomic instability mutations in prostate cancer: a retrospective analysis of US pharmacy and medical claims data.
Conclusion: PC patients carrying ≥1 pathogenic DNA instability mutation, and DRD mutation carriers specifically, had higher clinical burden than non-mutation carriers. Targeted therapies for these patients are needed to reduce clinical burden and associated healthcare resource utilization. PMID: 31352849 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Improving Medical Images Classification With Label Noise Using Dual-Uncertainty Estimation
Deep neural networks are known to be data-driven and label noise can have a marked impact on model performance. Recent studies have shown great robustness to classic image recognition even under a high noisy rate. In medical applications, learning from datasets with label noise is more challenging since medical imaging datasets tend to have instance-dependent noise (IDN) and suffer from high observer variability. In this paper, we systematically discuss the two common types of label noise in medical images - disagreement label noise from inconsistency expert opinions and single-target label noise from biased aggregation of...

Prostate Cancer Patient Receives First Treatment Using Latest Version Of Vitesse Real-Time Brachytherapy Planning System From Varian Medical Systems
A prostate cancer patient has become the first person in the world to be treated using the latest version of Varian's Vitesse™ real time planning solution for planning and performing advanced high-dose-rate (HDR), ultrasound-guided brachytherapy treatments. The treatment took place at the Levine Cancer Institute in Charlotte, North Carolina. "Our team was very impressed overall with this treatment planning system," says Dr. Michael Haake, chief, division of Radiation Oncology at Carolinas Medical Center, Levine Cancer Institute...

Campaign results in plummeting rates of unnecessary medical tests in sweden
The rate of inappropriate cancer scans for low-risk prostate cancer patients in Sweden plummeted in the decade following a joint campaign to curtail such tests by Swedish County Councils and the National Prostate Cancer Register (NPCR) of Sweden, a professional association of Swedish urologists. The results, published online in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, suggest that curtailing unneeded medical tests, an urgent healthcare policy goal in the United States highlighted in the Choosing Wisely Campaign, among other initiatives, is achievable, says Danil V...

The role of medical physics in prostate cancer radiation therapy
Medical physics, both as a scientific discipline and clinical service, hugely contributed and still contributes to the advances in the radiotherapy of prostate cancer. The traditional translational role in developing and safely implementing new technology and methods for better optimizing, delivering and monitoring the treatment is rapidly expanding to include new fields such as quantitative morphological and functional imaging and the possibility of individually predicting outcome and toxicity.

Effectiveness and safety of cabazitaxel chemotherapy for metastatic castration-resistant prostatic carcinoma on Turkish patients (The Anatolian Society of Medical Oncology).
CONCLUSIONS: This study reflects toxicity profile of Turkish patients as a Caucasian race. We suggest that cabazitaxel is a safe and effective treatment option for mCRPC patients who progress after docetaxel. Moreover, ethnicity may play important roles both in treatment response and in toxicity profile. PMID: 27097941 [PubMed - in process]

Racial Differences in Geographic Access to Medical Care as Measured by Patient Report and Geographic Information Systems
Conclusions: GIS-calculated travel time may underestimate access to care, especially for black patients. Future studies that use GIS-calculated travel times to examine racial disparities in spatial access to care might consider including patient-reported travel times and controlling for factors that might affect the accuracy of GIS-calculated travel times.

Clinical analysis of the approximate, 3-dimensional, biological effective dose equation in multiphase treatment plans
A multiphase, approximate biological effective dose (BEDA) equation was introduced because most treatment planning systems (TPS) are incapable of calculating the true BED (BEDT). This work investigates the accuracy and precision of the multiphase BEDA relative to the BEDT in clinical cases. Ten patients with head and neck cancer and 10 patients with prostate cancer were studied using their treatment plans from Pinnacle3 9.2 (Philips Medical, Fitchburg, WI). The organs at risk (OARs) that were studied are the normal brain, left and right optic nerves, optic chiasm, spinal cord, brainstem, bladder, and rectum.

Partial Validation of the Sleep Health Construct in the Medical Outcomes Study Sleep Questionnaire
AbstractSleep health is postulated as a multi-dimensional construct comprised of sleepiness/alertness, timing, duration, efficiency, and satisfaction. New questionnaires for its measurement have been proposed. We performed secondary data analyses and analyzed responses on a widely used, well-established sleep questionnaire to determine whether the construct might be detectable with an existing questionnaire. Healthy men (n = 7604) aged 55–75 completed the six-item Medical Outcomes Study Sleep Questionnaire (MOSSQ) at baseline in a large, randomized clinical trial [the Reduction by Dutasteride of Prostate Cancer Event...
