Association between Albumin, Total Bilirubin, and Uric Acid Serum Levels and the Risk of Cancer: A Prospective Study in a Korean Population
CONCLUSION: The findings of this study support the role of antioxidants in carcinogenesis. Future large-cohort studies are needed to confirm the predictive value of albumin, UA, and total bilirubin levels in each type of cancer.PMID:34427064 | PMC:PMC8382725 | DOI:10.3349/ymj.2021.62.9.792

Hypothesis driven single nucleotide polymorphism search (HyDn-SNP-S).
Abstract The advent of complete-genome genotyping across phenotype cohorts has provided a rich source of information for bioinformaticians. However the search for SNPs from this data is generally performed on a study-by-study case without any specific hypothesis of the location for SNPs that are predictive for the phenotype. We have designed a method whereby very large SNP lists (several gigabytes in size), combining several genotyping studies at once, can be sorted and traced back to their ultimate consequence in protein structure. Given a working hypothesis, researchers are able to easily search whole genome gen...

How reliable are “reputable sources” for medical information on the Internet? The case of hormonal therapy to treat prostate cancer
Conclusions: Few seemingly reputable Internet sources for medical information provide viewers with the detailed and up-to-date information that they may expect from such sites when searching for alternatives to standard treatment for androgen suppression. Strategies for keeping such websites up-to-date and reliable are discussed. Sites may improve their credibility and usefulness if they (1) present all evidence-based treatment options, (2) regularly update and time stamp their information, (3) acknowledge that their recommendations on treatments may become out-of-date quickly, (4) and direct viewers to information on rel...

Detection of prostate cancer with multiparametric MRI (mpMRI): effect of dedicated reader education on accuracy and confidence of index and anterior cancer diagnosis
Conclusions A dedicated reader education program on PCa detection with mpMRI was associated with a statistically significant increase in diagnostic accuracy of index cancer and anterior cancer detection as well as Gleason grade identification as compared to pre-education values. This was also associated with a significant increase in reader diagnostic confidence. This suggests that substantial interobserver variability in mpMRI interpretation can potentially be reduced with a focus on education and that this can occur over a fellowship training year.

Prostate cancer for the internist
Shikha Jaiswal, Rehan Sarmad, Sumant Arora, Radhikha Dasaraju, Komal SarmadNorth American Journal of Medical Sciences 2015 7(10):429-435In the United States, approximately 240,000 men are diagnosed annually with prostate cancer. Although effective treatment options are available for clinically localized cancer, the potential burdensome co-morbidities and attendant healthcare costs from over diagnosis and over treatment have escalated the discussion and controversy regarding appropriate screening, diagnosis, and optimal management of prostate cancer. Although the lifetime risk of developing prostate cancer is approximately ...

Annual Medical Expenditure and Productivity Loss Among Colorectal, Female Breast, and Prostate Cancer Survivors in the United States
Conclusions: Colorectal, breast, and prostate cancer survivors experienced statistically significantly higher economic burden compared with individuals without a cancer history; however, excess economic burden varies by cancer site and age. Targeted efforts will be important in reducing the economic burden of colorectal, breast, and prostate cancer.

Assessing Under-utilization of Na-18F PET/CT for Oncologic Bone Imaging at a Single Academic Medical Center
Conclusions Our findings demonstrate that there is marked under-utilization of Na-18F PET/CT for oncologic bone imaging when compared with whole-body MDP imaging. Within our institution, there is relatively few breast cancer patients referred for Na-18F PET/CT whereas breast cancer patients constitute the majority of oncologic whole body 99mTc MDP studies. On the other hand, prostate cancer patients make up the majority of referrals for Na-18F PET/CT whereas less than 20% of 99mTc MDP studies are routinely performed in prostate cancer patients. There were no instances of Na-18F PET utilization for other genitourinary cance...

Pain, acceptance of illness, adjustment to life with cancer and coping strategies in prostate cancer patients.
Conclusions: The main belief about pain control in prostate cancer patients is that powerful others (doctors) control pain. The study patients cope with disease constructively. The main socioeconomic variables which differentiate the scores obtained across all tests are income and education. PMID: 29181078 [PubMed]
