Turner syndrome and meningioma: Support for a possible increased risk of neoplasia in Turner syndrome.
We describe a woman with Turner syndrome (45,X) with a meningioma, in whom a second neoplasia, basal cell carcinomas of the scalp and nose, developed five years later in the absence of therapeutic radiation. Together with 7 cases of Turner syndrome with meningioma from a population-based survey in the United Kingdom, and 3 other isolated cases in the literature, we review this small number of patients for evidence of risk factors related to Turner syndrome, such as associated structural anomalies or prior treatment. We performed histological and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) of 22q (NF2 locus) analyses of the me...

Can You Think Yourself Into A Different Person?
For years she had tried to be the perfect wife and mother but now, divorced, with two sons, having gone through another break-up and in despair about her future, she felt as if she’d failed at it all, and she was tired of it. On 6 June 2007 Debbie Hampton, of Greensboro, North Carolina, took an overdose of more than 90 pills – a combination of ten different prescription drugs, some of which she’d stolen from a neighbor’s bedside cabinet. That afternoon, she’d written a note on her computer: “I’ve screwed up this life so bad that there is no place here for me and nothing I can contr...

Illuminating The Hallway: A Search For A Life After Cancer (Part One)
Something serendipitous happens when diagnosed with cancer, something magical. When it happens everything aligns to one aching, breathless moment. Time stops. Clarity in all things arrives. In the wake of disaster there's an uncanny way in which things fall into place. It could be described with the same vain that Sogyal Rinpoche writes in The Tibetan Book of The Living and Dying, as the "first step in the practice of meditation...purif[ying] the ordinary mind, unmasking and exhausting its habits and illusions, so that we can, at the right moment, recognize who we really are." In a flash, the truth of ourselves is reve...

Treatment of brain metastases.
CONCLUSION: Patient performance status and extent of disease play the most important roles in selecting between an aggressive or more conservative approach. As several other options are available, treatment decisions should be made in cooperation with multiple medical specialties and the involvement of multidisciplinary teams. In the future, brain metastases could become less of a treatment obstacle than they are today. PMID: 27876898 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Efficient Segmentation of Brain Tumor Using FL-SNM with a Metaheuristic Approach to Optimization
AbstractNowadays, automatic tumor detection from brain images is extremely significant for many diagnostic as well as therapeutic purposes, due to the unpredictable shape and appearance of tumors. In medical image analysis, the automatic segmentation of tumors from brain using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data is the most critical issue. Existing research has some limitations, such as high processing time and lower accuracy, because of the time required for the training process. In this research, a new automatic segmentation process is introduced using machine learning and a swarm intelligence scheme. Here, a fuzzy log...

Using advanced information and communication technologies to advance oncology education in Africa
CONCLUSION: Africa has the capacity to implement successful e-Learning in oncology, which is consistent with findings in previous work such as the AORTIC. Greater investment by institutions and governments is needed in terms of resources and policy changes to facilitate the implementation of effective online oncology training. Purposeful engagement of diaspora oncology health professionals with relevant cultural backgrounds as with some current collaborative efforts is highly recommended in helping turn brain drain into brain circulation.PMID:33912236 | PMC:PMC8057784 | DOI:10.3332/ecancer.2021.1211
