Personalised decision making to predict absolute metastatic risk in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma: development and validation of a clinico-pathological model
EClinicalMedicine. 2023 Aug 19;63:102150. doi: 10.1016/j.eclinm.2023.102150. eCollection 2023 Sep.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is a common skin cancer, affecting more than 2 million people worldwide yearly and metastasising in 2-5% of patients. However, current clinical staging systems do not provide estimates of absolute metastatic risk, hence missing the opportunity for more personalised treatment advice. We aimed to develop a clinico-pathological model that predicts the probability of metastasis in patients with cSCC.METHODS: Nationwide cohorts from (1) all patients with a first primary c...

A common 18F-FDG PET radiomic signature to predict survival in patients with HPV-induced cancers
Eur J Nucl Med Mol Imaging. 2023 Aug 26. doi: 10.1007/s00259-023-06320-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLocally advanced cervical cancer (LACC) and anal and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (ASCC and OPSCC) are mostly caused by oncogenic human papillomaviruses (HPV). In this paper, we developed machine learning (ML) models based on clinical, biological, and radiomic features extracted from pre-treatment fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography ([18F]-FDG PET) images to predict the survival of patients with HPV-induced cancers. For this purpose, cohorts from five institutions were used: two cohorts o...

The value of RACK1 and peripheral blood M2/M1 monocyte ratio on the prognosis of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma
This study is to evaluate the effect of receptor for activated c kinase 1 (RACK1) and peripheral blood M2/M1 monocytes ratio on the prognosis of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). A total of 115 OSCC patients who underwent radical surgery in North China University of Science and Technology Affiliated Hospital from January 2015 to December 2015 were included in the experimental group and 34 healthy individuals after a physical examination during the same period were included in the control group. Cancer and para-cancerous tissues were collected and the relationship between RACK1 and M2/M1 ratio and the progn...

Radiotherapy for postoperative vaginal recurrences of cervical squamous cell carcinoma: analysis of dosing and prognosis
This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of salvage radiotherapy for vaginal recurrence of SCC in patients who previously underwent surgery and to explore prognostic factors associated with survival. Ninety-seven patients with histologically proven SCC who were treated for vaginal recurrence at Peking Union Medical College Hospital were identified. All patients had previously undergone surgery and received salvage radiotherapy. Factors predictive of overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), and local control (LC) were investigated. The median follow-up time was 42.5 months. The estimated 5-year OS, PFS, a...

Primary breast squamous cell carcinoma: A case report at a tertiary hospital in Northern Tanzania
Clin Case Rep. 2023 Jun 19;11(6):e7586. doi: 10.1002/ccr3.7586. eCollection 2023 Jun.ABSTRACTKEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Primary SCC of the breast is a very rare disease.Metastasis from elsewhere should be excluded first. The tumor is a very aggressive with poor prognosis. No standard treatment approaches are available.Managed by surgical excision followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy.ABSTRACT: Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the breast is an exceedingly rare disease, and its management is still unclear. A-65-year-old lady presented with a progressive swelling of her right breast that started spontaneously. Other potential ...

Integration of IDPC Clustering Analysis and Interpretable Machine Learning for Survival Risk Prediction of Patients with ESCC
AbstractPrecise forecasting of survival risk plays a pivotal role in comprehending and predicting the prognosis of patients afflicted with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). The existing methods have the problems of insufficient fitting ability and poor interpretability. To address this issue, this work proposes a novel interpretable survival risk prediction method for ESCC patients based on extreme gradient boosting improved by whale optimization algorithm (WOA-XGBoost) and shapley additive explanations (SHAP). Given the imbalanced nature of the data set, the adaptive synthetic sampling (ADASYN) is first used to g...

The role of interferon-stimulated gene 15 in the occurence and progression of cervical squamous cell carcinoma
J Physiol Pharmacol. 2023 Feb;74(1). doi: 10.26402/jpp.2023.10.08. Epub 2023 May 23.ABSTRACTTo identify molecular markers for early diagnosis and new targets for treatment of cervical squamous cell carcinoma. Our study involved 52 carcinoma tissues that were confirmed pathologically as cervical squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC) at the Fourth Hospital of Hebei Medical University in 2021. We obtained 36 control specimens from patients who had undergone hysterectomy for benign uterine diseases in 2021, with no cervical lesions as confirmed by pathology. Total RNA was extracted from all the samples. Reverse transcription and quan...
