The level of education and knowledge of skin cancer risk factors in maintenance hemodialysis patients
An increased risk of skin cancer is particularly important in the population of maintenance hemodialysis (HD), who are potential transplant recipients. In transplant recipients who are exposed to immunosuppression, the neoplastic skin disease my take a more aggressive course. Increased exposition to photoradiation, elderly age, a low skin phototype, sunburns in childhood, and a history of smoking are the main factors contributing to the development of skin neoplasms. The knowledge of these risk factors as well as education on sun protection should be of importance for such patients.

Quality of Life in Patients with Non-melanoma Skin Cancer: Implications for Healthcare Education Services and Supports
AbstractNon-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is the most prevalent type of cancer among Caucasian populations worldwide. The purpose of this work was to measure quality of life (QOL) of the patients with diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) who were referred to our cancer clinic. During 1  year, 95 patients were selected and asked to complete Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) questionnaires. Ninety-five patients with NMSC (74 men and 21 women) with mean age of 64.6 ± 12.5 participated in this cross-sectional study. From 95 patients, 75 had BCC, 15 had SCC, and 5 patients ha d both ...

Gel manicures and ultraviolet A light: A call for patient education
Gel manicures have become a popular beauty trend in recent years. The specially formulated nail polish must undergo curing under light-based units. The majority of these curing lamps emit high-intensity ultraviolet A, which can cause skin damage and increase the risk for skin cancers. Incorporating relevant information in patient education endeavors can help them practice avoidance, apply broad-spectrum sunscreen prior, or use nitrile exam gloves in order to prevent photoaging and skin cancer resulting from these procedures.

Risk Perception Plays Minimal Role in Sun Exposure Behaviours
This study sought to assess the efficacy of this approach, by interrogating correlations between risk perception and sun exposure behaviour. A 31-item questionnaire assessing skin cancer risk factors, tanning attitudes, sunburn and tanning behaviour was undertaken by individuals who attended a workplace skin check. Validated questions were included to assess cognitive and affective risk perception and to frame risk as absolute, comparative and conditional. One hundred sixty-seven respondents completed the questionnaire. No aspects of risk perception (absolute cognitive, affective or conditional) significantly correlated wi...

Skin Cancer Prevention: Psychosocial Predictors of Sunscreen Use in University Students
AbstractSkin cancer has the most prevention potential among all cancers. Sunscreen use is an effective method in reducing the risk prevalence of skin cancer. The aim of this study was to determine the cognitive determinants of sunscreen use among university students based on the health belief model (HBM). This cross-sectional study was conducted among 301 university students in the west of Iran. Students were randomly selected to participate voluntarily in the study. Participants filled out a self-administered questionnaire. Data were analyzed by SPSS version 16 using appropriate statistical tests including correlation and...

Improving subungual melanoma detection through nail technician video education
Introduction: Subungual melanoma (SM) is a type of acral lentiginous melanoma that emerges from the nail matrix and may involve the nail-bed, hyponychium, and proximal nail-fold. Early detection can improve survival, but lack of recognition and misdiagnosis contributes to delayed diagnosis and poor prognosis. Thus, education is essential for promoting early follow-up with clinicians. Hairdressers are a useful screening tool for head and neck melanoma detection, and online video training demonstrated improved melanoma knowledge and detection efficacy.

Review of skin cancer prevention education targeting pediatric patients
Introduction: The incidence of melanoma skin cancer, in both children and adults, continues to rise in the United States. Children are particularly vulnerable with studies citing frequent sunburns and cumulative UV exposure before age 20 as a primary cause of cutaneous melanoma in later life. Further, evidence shows 21-50% of total sun exposure may occur before the age of 18. Early exposure to sun care education and changes in behavior may offer an opportunity to curb these trends.

Knowledge Levels of Kindergarten Teachers About Skin Cancer, Sun Protection Behaviors, and Affecting Factors
AbstractThe aim of this study was to determine the knowledge level of kindergarten teachers regarding skin cancer, the sun protection behaviors they exhibit for themselves/their students, and the affecting factors. This descriptive study was carried out in the Mediterranean region in a province located by the sea. The universe of the study consisted of 181 teachers working in kindergartens, and data were collected from the 81% who agreed to participate in the study. The mean Skin Cancer and Sun Knowledge Scale of the teachers was 12.50  ± 3.27 (range 0–25) and the mean Sun Protection Behavior Scale score was 24.78â€...

Sun Protection Policies and Practices in Preschool and Elementary Schools in Andalusia (Spain)
AbstractSun exposure in childhood is a major risk factor for the development of skin cancer as an adult. School children spend much of their time outdoors exposed to ultraviolet radiation during recreational and sports activities. Skin cancer incidence tripled from 1978 to 2002 in Spain. Andalusia, the largest and sunniest region of Spain, lacks data on the sun protection measures taken in schools. To address this deficit, the aim of this study was to determine photoprotection practices and policies in preschools and primary schools in Andalusia. This descriptive study involved the administration of an online questionnaire...
