Autophagy in colitis-associated colon cancer: exploring its potential role in reducing initiation and preventing IBD-Related CAC development
Autophagy. 2023 Sep 18. doi: 10.1080/15548627.2023.2259214. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTColitis-associated colon cancer (CAC) is a distinct form of colorectal cancer that emerges from prolonged colitis in individuals with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Chronic inflammation is considered as the most critical contributor to the development and progression of CAC, with the degree and persistence of the inflammatory response being the primary drivers of CAC progression in individuals with IBD. Macroautophagy/autophagy, which is a cellular process that aids in preserving the intestinal mucosal barrier and regulating intest...

Unlocking the potential of targeting histone-modifying enzymes for treating IBD and CRC
Clin Epigenetics. 2023 Sep 11;15(1):146. doi: 10.1186/s13148-023-01562-1.ABSTRACTDysregulation of histone modifications has been implicated in the pathogenesis of both inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colorectal cancer (CRC). These diseases are characterized by chronic inflammation, and alterations in histone modifications have been linked to their development and progression. Furthermore, the gut microbiota plays a crucial role in regulating immune responses and maintaining gut homeostasis, and it has been shown to exert effects on histone modifications and gene expression in host cells. Recent advances in our underst...

Long-Term Surgical Outcomes and Pathological Analysis of Proctectomy Specimens after Subtotal Colectomy for Ulcerative Colitis: A Retrospective Cohort Study from a Tertiary Centre
Conclusions: At 10 years after STC for UC, eighty-nine (46.4%) patients had proctectomy, of which fifty-two had IPAA (27%). However, no inflammation was found in the proctectomy specimen in one third of these patients. Therefore, it is possible that IRA may still have a role in the occasional patient with UC.PMID:37685796 | PMC:PMC10488829 | DOI:10.3390/jcm12175729

Statin use and risk of colorectal cancer in patients with inflammatory bowel disease
EClinicalMedicine. 2023 Aug 24;63:102182. doi: 10.1016/j.eclinm.2023.102182. eCollection 2023 Sep.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Statin use has been linked to a reduced risk of advanced colorectal adenomas, but its association with colorectal cancer (CRC) in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) - a high risk population for CRC - remains inconclusive.METHODS: From a nationwide IBD cohort in Sweden, we identified 5273 statin users and 5273 non-statin users (1:1 propensity score matching) from July 2006 to December 2018. Statin use was defined as the first filled prescription for ≥30 cumulative defined daily doses and follow...

Clinical features and surgical selection in colitis-associated colorectal cancer with ulcerative colitis
CONCLUSION: UC patients with cancer/dysplasia were more likely than refractory patients to have mild inflammation; they also had a longer duration of UC disease and better nutritional status.PMID:37641118 | PMC:PMC10463818 | DOI:10.1186/s12893-023-02160-x

Monotropein inhibits colitis associated cancer through VDR/JAK1/STAT1 regulation of macrophage polarization
Int Immunopharmacol. 2023 Aug 24;124(Pt A):110838. doi: 10.1016/j.intimp.2023.110838. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTColorectal cancer (CRC) is a growing concern due to its high morbidity and mortality, and the search for effective and less toxic active substances against inflammatory bowel diseases has been a hot topic in the research and development of drugs against CRC. It is reported that monotropein isolated from the roots of Morinda officinalis, can improve Dextran Sodium Sulfate (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis in mice, but its therapeutic effects and mechanisms for CRC treatment are still to be investigated. In the ...

Promoter methylation levels of microRNA-124 in non-neoplastic rectal mucosa as a potential biomarker for ulcerative colitis-associated colorectal cancer in pediatric-onset patients
CONCLUSION: miR-124 methylation in non-neoplastic rectal mucosa may be a useful biomarker for identifying patients with pediatric-onset UC who face the highest risk of developing UC-CRC.PMID:37610628 | DOI:10.1007/s00595-023-02738-1

Crohn's disease-related anal fistula cancer diagnosed by examination under anesthesia: a case report
CONCLUSION: In a long-term CD patient with anorectal lesions, we performed an EUA to diagnose the coexistence of anal fistula cancer at an early stage, and surgical resection was achieved. EUA is effective for the early detection and treatment of CD-related CRC and may contribute to an improved prognosis.PMID:37610526 | DOI:10.1186/s40792-023-01722-8
