What Are Common Gastrointestinal Polyposes in Children?
Discussion Bloody stools or blood in the diaper is a relatively common complaint in general pediatrics. For most patients it is often a minor concern. Commonly it is a transient problem (e.g. rectal fissure caused by constipation or trauma) or often not blood (e.g. urate crystals in the diaper, food, menses, etc.). Real blood does occur with an identifiable cause such as long distance running or heavy exercise, or milk protein allergy/sensitivity that improves with a milk-restricted diet. Many more serious causes are associated with heavier or more recalcitrant bleeding, increased defecation, abdominal pain, poor eating an...

Loss-of-Function in SMAD4 Might Not Be Critical for Human Natural Killer Cell Responsiveness to TGF- β
This study was carried out in accordance with approval of the Melbourne Health and Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research's Human Research Ethics Committee (approval number: 2013.081). All subjects gave written informed consent for participation and publication. Results and Discussion TGF-β signaling in NK cells is associated with: phosphorylation in SMAD2 and 3, inhibition of IL-15-induced metabolism/proliferation, simultaneous downregulation of CD44, CD49e, and Eomes, and upregulation of CD16 and CD49a expression (7, 10). SMAD family member 4 (SMAD4) belongs to the SMAD family of transcript...

Two weeks to bowel cancer?
There’s no doubt antibiotics have saved a lot of lives. But because they’ve been overprescribed for so many years we’ve ended up with a slew of health problems. For one thing, overuse of antibiotics wreaks havoc on your microbiome… That’s your body’s ecosystem. Your microbiome has 100 trillion or so bacteria, viruses and fungi. It affects just about every organ and body system. Some of these gut bugs cause disease and infection. But other good bacteria are called “probiotics.” They boost your immune system. They help you digest your food and turn it into vitamins. But in ...

Abstract A32: A randomized, controlled trial of fish oil supplementation on eicosanoid production in patients at risk for colorectal cancer
Long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) have anti-inflammatory properties and may be a potential chemopreventive agent for colorectal cancer. Dietary n-3 LCPUFAs decreases tissue content of arachidonic acid, inhibits prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase, and reduces prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production. Eleven alpha-hydroxy-9, 15-dioxo-2, 3, 4, 5-tetranorprostane-1, 20-dioic acid (PGE-M) is a urinary metabolite of prostaglandin E2 that is associated with an increased risk for colorectal adenomas and cancer. Limited data exists investigating the im...

Adverse histological features in malignant colorectal polyps: a contemporary series of 239 cases
Conclusions Surgical resection should be recommended if ≥2 of these adverse histological features are present and may be warranted if one feature is present. A positive margin may require additional local resection but not necessarily surgery if no other adverse factors are present.
