Effect of interferon- α on COVID-19 in-hospital mortality: a large-scale propensity score-matched study
CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that subcutaneous administration of IFN-α, with or without remdesivir, does not have any significant impact on COVID-19 mortality and ICU admission. Future clinical trials considering the time, subtype, and form of IFN-α administration are warranted to investigate the potential therapeutic effects of IFN-α on COVID-19.PMID:37724852 | DOI:10.1684/ecn.2023.0485

Potential Drug Interactions in Terminally-Ill Cancer Patients, a Report from the Middle East
This study aims to evaluate the epidemiology of potential drug interactions in terminally-ill cancer patients receiving exclusively supportive care. In this cross-sectional study, during a 6-month follow-up, we considered the medical record of terminally-ill cancer patients referred to palliative care at the cancer center in Isfahan, Iran. Potential drug-drug interactions (DDIs) were assessed by Lexi-Interact ver.1.1 online software. During the study period, 133 terminally-ill cancer patients were recruited. We detected 1678 DDIs with moderate or major severity levels. Among them, 330, 219, 32, 1075, and 51 interactions we...

Qualitative analysis of the coding of pathological data of cancer registry centers: A study in North of Iran
CONCLUSION: The most reports were on carcinoma morphology, and the Kappa coefficient in morphology codes has almost complete reliability. In terms of behavior coding, there was the most agreement in the category of benign cancers. The Kappa coefficient in given behavior codes has low reliability.PMID:37713374 | DOI:10.1371/journal.pone.0291139

Human parvovirus B19 infection in malignant and benign tissue specimens of different head and neck anatomical subsites
CONCLUSIONS: To sum up, B19V was frequently present in HNSCC tissues of Iranian patients but mostly absent in the adjacent non-tumor tissues as well as oral mucocele lesions, buccal, and nasopharyngeal swabs of healthy subjects. HPV possibly contributes to B19V persistence in HNSCC tissues. Additional research is required to investigate potential etiological or cofactor roles of B19V in the development of HNSCCs.PMID:37710342 | DOI:10.1186/s13027-023-00528-5

Two Distinct Deleterious Causative Variants in a Family with Multiple Cancer-Affected Patients
CONCLUSION: Herein, we interestingly identify two distinct deleterious causative variants (CHEK2: NM_007194.4: c.538C>T, p.Arg180Cys and MLH1: NM_000249.4, c.844G>A, p.Ala282Thr) in a family with several cancer-affected members. Furthermore, this study's findings established the utility of WES in the genetic diagnostics of cancer.PMID:37694253 | PMC:PMC10492615 | DOI:10.4103/abr.abr_366_22

Geographical Distribution of Colorectal Cancer in Southwestern Iran Between Years 2011 and 2019
CONCLUSION: The cumulative incidence of colorectal cancer is relatively high in Khuzestan province. The cumulative incidence of the disease was higher in the central regions of the province than in other regions. Also, based on geographical areas, the cumulative incidence of the disease was higher in areas with arid climates, the average rainfall was 100-200 mm, and in areas with agricultural land use.PMID:37681264 | DOI:10.5152/tjg.2023.22666
