Post-COVID condition or “long COVID”, return-to work, and occupational health research
In conclusion, COVID-19 remains an important topic for the occupational health research agenda, including acute and post COVID conditions. Although there is still debate about the definition of what a `post-COVID condition` entails, the sheer number of patients who are not returning to work in a timely manner or returning to work with limitations, and the lack of research interventions available should lead occupational health practitioners and researchers to work not only to prevent infection but to prevent or reduce work disability resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic and future pandemics. Acknowledgements and conflict...

Predicting pattern of coronavirus using X-ray and CT scan images
AbstractNovel coronavirus is a disease that can propagate easily with very minute carelessness and with very little physical contact between people. Presently, the world ’s central health institution called the World Health Organization has approved and advised the Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) swab test as the most important and effective diagnostic method to confirm if a patient has COVID-19 symptoms or not. This test takes at least a day for revealing the results, depending on the feasible resources in the neighborhood. Moreover, the RT-PCR test gives sometimes false positive results and slo...

The Virus Hunters Trying to Prevent the Next Pandemic
Nobody saw SARS-CoV-2 coming. In the early days of the pandemic, researchers were scrambling to collect samples from people who had mysteriously developed fevers, coughs, and breathing problems. Pretty soon, they realized that the disease-causing culprit was a new virus humans hadn’t seen before. And the world, lacking a coordinated global response, was unprepared. Some countries acted quickly to develop tests for the novel coronavirus, while others with fewer resources were left behind. With a virus oblivious to national borders, and with travel between countries and continents more common than it had been in previo...

Prevalence of COVID-19 in Egyptian Children With Hemoglobinopathies and Inherited Anemias
Since the World Health Organization (WHO) announced coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) to be a pandemic, children’s COVID-19 cases were generally less severe than adults. The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of COVID-19 cases among children with hemoglobinopathies and other inherited anemias living in El-Minya Governorate, Egypt, who are at high risk of exposure to infection. This cross-sectional study evaluated data from 258 children with hemoglobinopathies and inherited anemias. A questionnaire was used to collect data about COVID-19 symptoms coupled with appropriate investigations (complete blood coun...

Lymph node metastasis as the initial symptom of a germ cell tumor in an adult: A case report
Conclusions: In cases of malignant tumor in the submandibular lymph nodes of adults, the metastasis of a germ cell tumor should be considered an important differential diagnosis even if a primary tumor does not emerge. In this case, adequate postoperative chemotherapy is necessary.

News at a glance: Declining childhood vaccinations, rising ‘superbug’ infections, and a disputed Brazilian fossil
GLOBAL HEALTH Pandemic contributes to big drop in childhood vaccinations In what UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell called a “red alert,” childhood vaccination rates in many countries worldwide have dropped to the lowest level since 2008, in part because of the COVID-19 pandemic. UNICEF and the World Health Organization together track inoculations against diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus—which are administered as one vaccine—as a marker for vaccination coverage overall. In 2021, only 81% of children worldwide received the recommended three doses of the combined vaccine, down from 86% in 20...

Diagnosing COVID-19 using artificial intelligence: a comprehensive review
AbstractIn early March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) proclaimed the novel COVID-19 as a global pandemic. The coronavirus went on to be a life-threatening infection and is still wreaking havoc all around the globe. Though vaccines have been rolled out, a section of the population (the elderly and people with comorbidities) still succumb to this deadly illness. Hence, it is imperative to diagnose this infection early to prevent a potential severe prognosis. This contagious disease is usually diagnosed using a conventional technique called the Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR). However, this...

The association of clinical features and laboratory findings of COVID-19 infection with computed pneumonia volume
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was first detected in China in December 2019, and declared as a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) on March 11, 2020. To study the clinical features of patients with COVID-19, we analyzed the correlation between some inflammation-related indicators in patients’ serum and the severity of the disease, especially PV (pneumonia volume under CT scan) and pneumonia volume ratio (PVR). Sixty-six COVID-19 patients in Huai’an, China were selected as the research subjects. We collected the clinical data, including general characteristics, clinical symptoms, serum test result...
