Rectal artesunate for severe malaria, implementation research, Zambia
CONCLUSION: Despite the effects of the coronavirus disease, our results confirmed that pre-referral rectal artesunate administered by community health volunteers can be an effective intervention for severe malaria among young children. Our results strengthen the case for wider expansion of the pre-referral treatment in Zambia and elsewhere when combined with supporting interventions.PMID:37265679 | PMC:PMC10225942 | DOI:10.2471/BLT.22.289181

Utilization of Marine Seaweeds as a Promising Defense Against COVID-19: a Mini-review
Mar Biotechnol (NY). 2023 May 27. doi: 10.1007/s10126-023-10214-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCOVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) which mainly affects the respiratory system. It has been declared as a "pandemic" in March 2020 by the World Health Organization due to the high spreading rate. SARS-CoV-2 binds with the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptors on the cell surface which leads to the downregulation of ACE2 and upregulation of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) receptors. The elevated level of cytokines and ACE receptors leads to the ...

Peripheral nervous system involvement in SARS-CoV-2 infection: a review of the current pediatric literature
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was identified as the pathogen responsible for the pandemic health emergency declared by the World Health Organization in March 2020. During the first part of the pandemic, adults showed mild to severe respiratory symptoms. Children seemed initially exempt, both from acute and subsequent complications. Hyposmia or anosmia were promptly identified as the main symptoms of acute infection, so neurotropism of SARS-CoV-2 was immediately suspected. (1, 2). As the emergency progressed, post infectious neurological complications were described also in pediatric populatio...

Effect of COVID-19 on Pregnancy and Neonate's Vital Parameters: A Systematic Review
CONCLUSIONS: Due to insufficient data, further research is necessary. Further studies and follow-up are recommended, which would make possible an assessment of remote effects of COVID-19 on pregnancy and vital parameters of the newborn.PMID:37215313 | PMC:PMC10199793 | DOI:10.1155/2023/3015072
