Scientists say eye-disease drug may also help fight COVID
FINDINGSAn interdisciplinary research team led by UCLA found that a drug already approved by the Food and Drug Administration for eye disease, verteporfin, stopped the replication of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Their laboratory study identified  the Hippo signaling pathway as a potential target for therapies against the coronavirus.BACKGROUNDMany important human biological processes are controlled by complicated chain reactions called signaling pathways, in which certain proteins act as messenger molecules that promote or block the signals of other proteins. The lead researchers were investigating the Hippo...

Hippo signaling pathway activation during SARS-CoV-2 infection contributes to host antiviral response
In this study, we have uncovered a critical role for the evolutionarily conserved Hippo signaling pathway in COVID-19 pathogenesis. Given the complexity of COVID-19-associated cell injury and immunopathogenesis processes, we investigated Hippo pathway dynamics in SARS-CoV-2 infection by utilizing COVID-19 lung samples and human cell models based on pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (PSC-CMs) and human primary lung air –liquid interface (ALI) cultures. SARS-CoV-2 infection caused activation of the Hippo signaling pathway in COVID-19 lung and in vitro cultures. Both parental and Delta variant of concern (VOC) st...

IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 14359: Factors Associated with Discrepancy of Child-Adolescent/Parent Reported Quality of Life in the Era of COVID-19
This study revealed differences between child-reported and parent-reported HRQoL. The COVID-19 pandemic accentuated the discrepancies in observable dimensions and attenuated them in unobservable dimensions of HRQoL but did not impact the directional discrepancy; parents underestimated their child’s HRQoL more. These discrepancies appear to be explained by parent and child sociodemographic factors.

Retrospective observational study of the influence of the COVID-19 outbreak on infants hospitalisation for acute bronchiolitis
Conclusion The dramatic reduction in infants’ hospitalisations for acute bronchiolitis is an opportunity to change our future habits such as advising the population to wear masks and apply additional hygiene measures in case of respiratory tract infections. This may change the worldwide bronchiolitis burden and improve children respiratory outcomes.

IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 13932: Health Impacts of the COVID-19 Lockdown Measure in a Low Socio-Economic Setting: A Cross-Sectional Study on Reunion Island
re Patrick Gérardin In March 2020, the French government implemented nation-wide measures to reduce social contact and slow the progression of the emerging coronavirus responsible for COVID-19, the most significant being a complete home lockdown that lasted 8 weeks. Reunion Island is a French overseas department marked by large social inequalities. We draw the hypothesis that distancing and lockdown measures may have contributed to an increase in the social inequalities in health (SIH) on Reunion Island. The aim of our study was to describe the SIH during lockdown in the Reunionese population. We implemented a cross...

Immunoglobulin A Vasculitis Following COVID-19: A French Multicenter Case Series
CONCLUSION: This series describes the emergence of IgAV closely following COVID-19; we were not able to eliminate an incidental link between these events. Their disease outcomes were favorable. In most of our patients, the SARS-CoV-2 infection was paucisymptomatic, and we recommend RT-PCR tests to look for COVID-19 in patients without any evident triggers for IgAV.PMID:36243405 | DOI:10.3899/jrheum.220503
