Prof David Baldwin, Prof Wendy Burn & the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
So, I came on this via twitter. It features Prof David Baldwin, Prof Wendy Burn and the Royal College of Psychiatrists. I think it’s time to get my soapbox out again…  I take issue with quite a few things in this story, the most outrageous claim being the assertion made by Baldwin & Burn that “… In the vast majority of patients, any unpleasant symptoms experienced on discontinuing anti-depressants have resolved within two weeks of stopping treatment…” It is very worrying that in 2018 two very high profile mental health professionals can make a statement that is quite so wrong – and dangerous. I reall...

Trial By Error: NICE Rejects Current Guidance, Plans “ Full Update ”
By David Tuller, DrPH Let’s give credit where it’s due. Apparently someone with decision-making authority at the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has a grasp on reality and is willing to challenge the claims of the biopsychosocial ideological brigades. That’s the only logical explanation for last Wednesday’s welcome but unexpected announcement that the agency would pursue a “full update” of the guidance for the illness it calls CFS/ME. From what I gather, that means NICE will essentially start the whole guidance development process from scratch. In announcing the decision, NICE noted the...

‘ Chemical imbalance ’
There’s a lot of chat around at the moment about ‘chemical imbalance’… and I’ve written a lot over the years about it and here’s a link to the collected articles. The term Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) was invented by a marketing company to sell Seroxat/Paxil to the public. Along with this serious medical sounding piece of jargon, came the fairy tale of the ‘chemical imbalance’ When I started taking Seroxat in 1997, I wanted to know how this great new drug worked – the PIL (the leaflet that came with the tablets) told me “it boosts the levels of serotonin in your ...

Mental health and new models of care: lessons from the vanguards
This report draws on recent research with vanguard sites in England, conducted in partnership with the Royal College of Psychiatrists. It finds that where new models of care have been used to remove the barriers between mental health and other parts of the health system, local professionals saw this as being highly valuable in improving care for patients and service users. It concludes that there remains much to be done to fully embed mental health into integrated care teams, primary care, urgent and emergency care pathways, and in work on population health.ReportBlog Nine principles for success: integrating mental health ...

TRIAL BY ERROR: The Troubling Case of the PACE Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Study
By David Tuller, DrPH David Tuller is academic coordinator of the concurrent masters degree program in public health and journalism at the University of California, Berkeley.  A few years ago, Dr. Racaniello let me hijack this space for a long piece about the CDC’s persistent incompetence in its efforts to address the devastating illness the agency itself had misnamed “chronic fatigue syndrome.” Now I’m back with an even longer piece about the U.K’s controversial and highly influential PACE trial. The $8 million study, funded by British government agencies, purportedly proved that patients could “recover” fr...

Mental health on, or in, film
A conversation at home about F.D.C. Willard reminded me of Ian McEwan's novel "Enduring Love", for reasons which will become apparent in a later post.  There is brief mention of this novel in an earlier post about autobiography and biography as health literature, as it is a novel that deals with mental health issues.Looking for material on the web about the novel, I found the Minds on Film blog from the Royal College of Psychiatrists, which has an entry about the film of the novel.  This blog has been going for five years (there is an index, by health condition, of the first five years) and features structured re...

Improving acute inpatient psychiatric care for adults in England: interim report
The Commission on Acute Adult Psychiatric Care -The Commission on Acute Adult Psychiatric Care was set up by the Royal College of Psychiatrists in response to widespread concerns about the provision of acute inpatient psychiatric beds and alternatives to admission available for patients. This interim report is based on the Commission’s initial observations about acute inpatient psychiatric services for adults in England and its discussions with patients, carers, advocates, health and social care professionals and policy makers. It finds that the so-called bed or admission crisis in adult mental health is very significant...
