Top 10 List of Social Admits Defined!
What is a social admit to the hospital?   A social admission is generally accepted by healthcare professionals to be a patient with no acute medical needs that is brought into a hospital because no safe discharge arrangements could be made at the time they presented. Most social admits involve elderly patients who present to an emergency room with weakness, have a thorough negative workup and are too weak to go home but have no where else to go. They might have a non surgical fracture limiting their mobility or a family refusing to take them home. Most social admissions occur after-hours when community services are un...

Lucas Moore: 23-week 520-gram Baby Survives
Lucas Moore was born prematurely at 23 weeks weighing 520 grams, just 0.7 of an ounce over the hospital’s 500 gram cut-off point for intervention. (Telegraph) With severe health problems – including a bleed on the brain and a hole in his heart – Lucas’s chances seemed dire, and doctors warned there was a high chance of him suffering disabilities as a result.   But Lucas defied predictions and has now celebrated his first birthday.  The Daily Mail suggests that the case will fuel the debate over guidelines governing whether hospitals try to save the lives of extremely premature babies....

National neonatal audit programme: annual report 2013
Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) - This audit of neonatal care in England found that care for babies born in England and Wales has improved greatly over the last seven years as a record high number of neonatal units meet national care standards. It highlights variations in experiences of care across the country with babies born early in the south of England more likely to go home breastfeeding than those born in the north of England, increasing the chance of those babies born in the north of infection and disease - particularly concerning for premature babies needing specialist care. Report Pres...

This Is the Way One Father Told His Pediatrician “No” to Vaccines
What does an informed parent look like? We’ll show you. Below is a letter written by Bob O’kane, a concerned parent, to his pediatrician about vaccines and the danger they pose to his child. This letter is one great example of how to approach your doctor, especially if you have looked into the matter further and are uncomfortable with their stance on the topic. The name of the doctor has been intentionally omitted. Doctor XXX, My wife and I would like to say it was an absolute pleasure to meet you. We thank you for taking the time with us the other day to discuss our beautiful little daughter Rylan. I was wo...

Getting It Right: What Working Families Need
When my first child was born, in 1990, I’d been working for nearly a year as a writer for a federal contractor. Until then, health policy meant little to me. In fact, if you’d asked, I could not have told you what it was, or what it meant to my life, and the life that I was making. When I was hired, I read that I would be eligible for 4 or 6 weeks of maternity leave.  I also read that it took most couples a year to get pregnant: It took us a night.  It turned out that, by the time of my due date, I would be a week shy of eligibility for leave. Any time I took would be unpaid. It was proposal season, when contractors ...

Pulmonary edema due to beta agonist used as tocolytic
Beta agonist given as a tocolytic to prevent premature labour can rarely (thought to be one in four hundred) cause pulmonary edema. Pulmonary edema with use of beta agonist as tocolytic can occur with both oral and intravenous therapy and may occur within twenty four hours of discontinuation of therapy. Mechanism of pulmonary edema with beta agonist used as tocolytic seems to be unique to the pregnant state as even large doses of beta agonists in non pregnant females with asthma seldom produce pulmonary edema. Hypervolemia of pregnancy and excess fluid given during infusion of tocolytic have been implicated in the pathogen...

Should Premature Babies Be Included In The One-Size-Fits-All Vaccination Policy?
Conclusion Clearly, the one-size-fits-all vaccination policy does not fit premature babies. How can it be considered lawful or indeed moral to vaccinate premature babies with the same vaccinations that are administered to adults? We can see from the studies undertaken by Dr. Viera Scheibner and her late husband Leif Karlsson that many of the routine vaccinations used on premature babies today can cause them to suffer stress-induced breathing patterns. These studies are irrefutable and have been used worldwide to demonstrate the link between vaccinations and breathing difficulties in young babies. Despite this information, ...

Overselling the microbiome award - many - for stories about placental vs. oral microbiomes
Conclusions: Microbial contact in utero is associated with changes in fetal intestinal innate immune gene expression profile. Fetal and placental immune physiology may be modulated by maternal dietary intervention using specific probiotics. This paper was not mentioned or cited as far as I can tell in the current study.UPDATE 4: This paper also seems relevantMicrobial contact during pregnancy, intestinal colonization and human disease.  Abstract:Interaction with colonizing intestinal bacteria is essential for healthy intestinal and immunological development in infancy. What's the story? Branding Hurley Medical Center
by Andrea J. Simon I have had several requests to share my experiences as interim senior vice president of branding, marketing, physician services at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Mich., from 2008-2009, and again from 2010-2012. To help you in your own efforts to brand, market and build your organization, I've segmented the story into four blog posts, each with a specific focus. This post explains how you find the key essence of an institution and turn it into a real advantage--that brand story that answers the question "Why You." The next two posts focus on online experiences to build the brand story in an inbound ma...

by Miriam Zoll Image by TipsTimesAdmin via Flickr A new study published in the Journal of Perinatology online has found that in California from 2009-2011 there was a 24- to 27-fold increase in multiple births and significantly higher rates of preterm births, lower birth weights, fetal anomalies and stillbirth among infants born through assisted reproductive technologies (ART) or artificial insemination (AI) compared to babies conceived naturally. The retrospective study was based on 2009-2011 data from the California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development and conducted by researchers from the Loma Linda Univ...

Crosspost: Studying - not wantonly killing - the microbes around us and the rise of the "microbiology of the built environment"

This Study Reveals Children are Being Vaccinated With Toxic Levels of Aluminium Causing Neurological Damage and Autism
Conclusion Aluminum, as these papers have demonstrated, is extremely toxic, especially when children are repeatedly vaccinated with vaccines containing aluminum over the recommended limits. The FDA and ASPEN recommend 25 mcg to be a safe limit and yet, as Dr. Sears has shown in his article, many of the childhood vaccinations contain aluminum far in excess of this amount. The papers that I have studied make it abundantly clear that the more vaccines that children receive containing aluminum, the greater chance they have of developing autism, autoimmune diseases, Alzheimer’s disease and neurological deficits in the future....
