How can I remove coconut oil from my hair?
Laclave asks…I used coconut oil on my hair one time several weeks ago for its excellent ability to penetrate the hair. Initially, my hair was very greasy, but I was able to wash it a few times to remove the excess oil. Now, my husband still says my hair smells like coconut – several weeks later. I wash my hair every day. Is the coconut oil penetration irreversible? The Beauty Brains respond:  Coconut oil is a great treatment for hair because it penetrates into the cortex (the inner part of the hair shaft ) where it protects the protein bundles from the effects of water induced swelling. But it does have a dark sid...

Recipe: Pineapple-Cucumber Guacamole for Cinco de Mayo
If you are thinking about throwing a fiesta for Cinco de Mayo on Sunday, impress your friends by putting a fresh spin on this Mexican classic. Courtesy of Avocados from Mexico, this recipe transforms basic guacamole into a fresh tropical treat. Pineapple not only adds a twist of bright flavor, but its acidity helps to slow the browning of the avocados, too. The Mainstream Tobacco Control Movement and Smoking Among African Americans: Some Diversity But Little Inclusivity or Participation
No More than Token Support for Policy Change and Withholding of Evidence-Based Treatment1. No More than Token Support for Policy Change When the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids negotiated the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act with Philip Morris (with Congressional mediation), it had a perfect opportunity to advance a policy initiative that truly would have made a difference in reducing smoking among African Americans: banning flavored cigarettes. After all, approximately 80%-85% of African Americans smoke flavored cigarettes. This disproportionate preference for menthol cigarettes applies both to youth and a...

Struggling With Balanced Eating Habits? Choose My Plate!
If you have ever played darts, or even if you just understand it, then you know how to use “Choose My Plate” to help you put together healthy plates at each meal. Choose my plate is the guide (and best I’ve seen) from the USDA to empower people to make healthy food choices. Why darts? I compare “Choose My Plate” to darts because of the “bullseye”. In darts, you strive to hit the bullseye. You aim to get as close as you can pretty much every throw, and sometimes (let’s face it) you’re happy to get on the board! That is how I view the realities of healthy eating. There&...

Can Aerobic Exercise and Environmental Enrichment Slow Alzheimer's Disease?
In this study, scientists who were already providing wild mice with a running wheel for exercise, decided to add a novel toy or object to explore to their cage each day. The results were amazing. While the mice doing aerobic exercise were less impaired when injected with amyloid beta from Alzheimer’s patients, those mice who were given the novel toys each day were significantly less impaired than those with the aerobic exercise alone. Could it be that the novelty of going to the gym every day had a significant effect upon Dotty, above and beyond the exercise factor? It looks like that is a very real possibility. We all...

Personalized Nutrition – Making Food Choices that Work for You
As March marches on, I’m still finding ways to celebrate National Nutrition Month’s theme of “Eat Right, Your Way”. I was on WBAL (watch the full WBAL clip here) and Let’s Talk Live DC recently and shared some ideas to make eating healthier work for you. It’s all about personalized nutrition. My view: Not everything has to be absolutely perfect all of the time. I wrote about that in my blog for US News Health. Instead of thinking “all or nothing,” make choices that work for you and help you enjoy your meals. We know that eating wholesome foods delivers nutrients. The “My Plate&...

Nora Ephron’s Final Act - NYTimes.com
At 10 p.m. on a Friday night in a private room on the 14th Floor of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital on 68th and York Avenue, my mother was lying in her bed hallucinating, in that dream space people go on their way to being gone. She spoke of seeing trees, possibly a forest. And she mentioned to Nick, my stepfather, that she had been to the theater where her play was showing and that the audience was full. In reality, she had not left the hospital in a month, and the play, "Lucky Guy," was nearly a year away from opening. My brother, Max, and I stood there in disbelief. Though it had been weeks since her blood count showed any ...

Update and reflections
Lab resultsCreatinineMy latest creatinine tests show no change at 2.1mg/dL. This level has remained constant since about january. UltrasoundAn ultrasound scan revealed: Three of my four kidney stones have disappeared (without specific treatment). This is a relief as it's something less to worry about. My first nephrologist had prescribed what I felt was an aggresive course of 3 different drugs to try and clear the stones, and I decided against taking them (I stopped consulting that nephrologist). The remaining stone is 6mm and apparently it's position is favorable for “passing” (although I wasn't a...
