Cotton Candy Grapes
Fruit hybrids are nothing new as pluots and tangelos become increasingly visible in grocery store produce aisles. Recently I had the opportunity to sample a fruit that looked no different from your run-of-the-mill seedless grape, but with a unique flavour of cotton candy. The taste is more than reminiscent of the pink spun sugar - it's uncanny. The fruit, a product ofThe Grapery in California are the result of selective breeding of different grape varieties, increasing sugar content and heightening vanilla flavour to result in the familiar taste. Personally, while I found the taste remarkable, I don't think I could eat a w...

Seasonal Eating
By Quinn Phillips Quick: what local produce is in season right now? Most Americans probably couldn't answer that question. After all, with refrigeration and cargo jets, it's no longer necessary — or even common — to eat primarily produce that is in season locally. Chances are good, this time of year, that the fresh berries, greens, tomatoes, and peppers in your local supermarket come not from a nearby greenhouse, but from a farm located in a warmer climate hundreds or even thousands of miles away. And, of course, certain warm-weather produce — like bananas, oranges, and pineapples — is never in seas...

Hospital Horrors
The bullet hit me just below my rib cage, punching out a huge section of my liver and collapsing my right lung. Waves of pain rippled round my chest like a stone thrown in a still pond or echoes reverberating off sandstone cliffs.I gasped for breath but could find none. I tried to scream but had no voice.I rolled onto my back, clutching the entry wound with both hands, felt the wet, blood-soaked T-shirt beneath my fingers, sodden and cold.Wait… A bizarre fact flickered across my consciousness. The temperature of the human body is 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. The blood spilling from my torn abdomen should be warm—not cold.I...

Dry Day
Waterproofing Ellie has been very successful for us over the years:  Some Press n' Seal on the CVL cap and two sheets of Tegaderm over the whole site and she is good to go.  but one of the downsides of this is that more than one day of this makes  her skin raw and sore.  So we generally try to have a dry day after every wet day to let her skin recover. For our first Hawaiian dry day we took off for the center of the island to the Dole Pineapple plantation, a spectacular tourist trap complete with a narrow gauge train, the World's largest maze (like a hedge/corn maze but with hibiscus)  and more pine...
