9/14 Changed Everything
Over the last decade and a half, we ’ve heard over and over again that “September 11th changed everything”—but maybe September 14 was the pivotal date. Sixteen years ago today, Congress passed the2001 Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF). Aimed at the perpetrators of the 9/11 attacks and those who “harbored” or “aided” them, the AUMF has been transformed into an enabling act for globe-spanning presidential war.  “I don’t think one generation should bind another generation to war,” Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) insists, but that ’s exactly what’s happened: the AUMF Congress passed in 2001 st...

Terrorism and the New Domino Theory
Several weeks ago the Defense Departmentrevealed it is seriously considering drone strikes against Islamist terrorists in the Philippines, which would make it the eighth country the United States has bombed in the war on terror. Certainly the terrorists —who have operated in various forms there for over a hundred years—are a threat to Filipinos. They are not, however, a threat to the United States. Why, then, would the United States start bombing? The answer may lie in the misguided theory driving American thinking about terrorism.During the Cold War, America ’s political leaders subscribed to the domino theory. The t...

How healthcare social media campaigns may improve provisions of health in a devolved health system
The lack or ineffective social marketing strategy (supply side barrier) and lack of information on benefits and availment process (demand side barrier) are a few of the identified restrictions to the use of health services in complex decentralized health systems such as the Philippines. An effective social media campaign could narrow regional differences in the provisions of health and address these two barriers.Read more of this POST by clicking this>>>How healthcare social media campaigns may improve provisions of health in a devolved health system (Source: The Orthopedic Logbook)

Why Racism Is The Antithesis Of Self Development
I spent a day or so in the ER this past weekend. The details aren’t important other than to say chest pain and shortness of breath don’t necessarily mean you are about to become an ex-Life Coach and shuffle off this mortal coil. During the time I spent there I probably came into direct contact with about 50 members of staff. That’s a lot in such a short period of time until you realize I had 3 lots of blood taken, 2 chest x-rays, 2 nuclear medicine scans, a stress test and 2 CT scans over about a 24-hour period. I don’t like watching TV lying in bed and my phone service was intermittent at best so between the batt...

"The crew of a Filipino fishing boat. Seamen on small boats like this one, who make about $32 a month, say they want to work on larger vessels for the promise of a higher income, despite reports of abuse and unpaid wages. The photographer @hannahrey worked with @nytimes reporter @ian_urbina on a story about illegal "manning agencies," which trick villagers in the Philippines with false promises of high wages and send them to ships notorious for poor safety and labor records. Men are tricked and indebted on land, then abused or abandoned at sea. Follow @hannahrey to see a video from the story and visit the link in our profi...

Lucas Jr (University of Maryland) In an archipelagic country like the Philippines and with a healthcare delivery system lagging behind its neighbors, disruptive technologies offers us a new way of looking at problems.
